Growing weaker by the day, Vanessa is confronted by her partner Lily to contemplate her humanity in order to survive.

Our Tender Flesh is a relationship drama between two women, exploring their commitment to each other in spite of their circumstances. Subverting the mainstream dystopian genre, this film centers two queer women and revolves around their relationship to drive the inherently feminine story. This film stemmed from my fascination with ethics and what causes the boundaries of morality to blur: what is worth sacrificing? How far are we willing to go for the people we love? What makes us feel loved, wanted? Our Tender Flesh explores these ideas in a reality where cannibalism has become industrialized, but told from the view inside of the relationship of Vanessa and Lily.

In the bigger picture, this film nods to its world of how ecological regression has led them to this point of industrialized cannibalism and offers a commentary not only on the aftermath of a climate crisis, but also questions the expendability of humanity on a larger, governmental scale.

This story captures the complexities of female relationships and immerses the viewer into its intense dramatic setting, making the audience themselves question the same moral dilemma the characters face within their world. While the film nods to larger morality questions and how we view our own humanity, our intention with this film is to bring female and queer representation to the table in a space we haven't seen before. Our on-set crew, a group of incredibly talented female artists who've received awards and festival recognition for their work, are coming together to make Our Tender Flesh come to life.

Writer and Director : Kaylee Smith

Kaylee Smith, the Director of Our Tender Flesh, is in her Junior year at Tisch in NYU majoring in Film and Television. She is originally from Utah and has a strong background in photography, with several gallery awards for her editorial work. She’s recently been accepted to an exclusive Tisch special program abroad in London for Screenwriting which she’ll be attending next spring. Since coming to NYU, Kaylee has enjoyed exploring writing, directing, and cinematography, and she seeks to make films through the female gaze and represent queer stories. With influences from directors Celine Scammia and Greta Gerwig, Kaylee’s artistic intention is to bring female authenticity and complex female characters to her work, creating representation for women that she feels she missed in a lot of films she watched as a girl. Other than embarking on bringing Our Tender Flesh to life, Kaylee will be Director of Photography for two NYU Thesis films: When Skies are Gray (dir. Kaylee Rademacher), and Montse (dir. Sarah Whittum) where she looks forward to continue cinematically telling female empowering stories.

Executive Producer : Ariel Silva

As a passionate producer and storyteller, Ariel's journey as a first-generation college student and her cultural heritage provide rich sources of inspiration, creating connections that resonate deeply with audiences. Ariel's dedication to showcasing underrepresented, diverse voices shines through in her filmography, collaborating on projects that empower women, celebrate the queer community and uplift people of color. Currently, Ariel is developing her own short film "Penitent", a short film project that promises to add another heartfelt chapter to her growing portfolio.

Co-Producer : Niya Leigh

Niya Leigh is a Junior at NYU Tisch studying Film & television, with a focus on directing, writing, producing, and post-production. She aims to work on projects that have a new and creative edge in an attempt to integrate untold stories within new mediums. She has recently been working through the post-production process of a music video that she directed and produced for upcoming artist Josh Darkwah; and is in the pre-production process of a music film for the artist as well. Niya strives to be an innovative force for her generation, through her filmmaking and future business endeavors.

Director of Photography : Emily Massey

Emily Massey is a NY-based director and cinematographer. She loves working on projects that highlight underrepresented communities and stories.

Most recently, she worked on a documentary about an asian bookstore, an Apple Music film event, and a music video she directed. As a cinematographer, she seeks to utilize styles and visual languages from international movies and new media.

She’s beyond excited for this cannibal drama and all-female team spearheaded by the talented Kaylee Smith.

Assistant Director: Avery Garig

Avery Garig is a Manhattan based filmmaker and student at NYU Tisch School of the Arts concentrated primarily in documentary filmmaking. Currently, she works as both a post sound designer and engineer at Radio Waves Studios, a multimedia sound production house in the city.

Production Designer: Riley Greenbaun

Riley is a Junior at NYU, studying Film & Television Production, with a strong focus on addressing systemic oppression against women and individuals within Queer identities. Her talent lies in creating immersive and emotionally resonant settings for various short films, enhancing storytelling with meticulous attention to detail. Riley is passionate about female-centric productions and actively seeks opportunities to empower women through her work as a production designer.
