The Project

Pensierini was a project created to help all those students who want to learn how to write in Italian and those who want to learn Italian by writing. “Pensierini” in Italian means the essays and compositions that we write in school as kids; the simplicity of expression and diction of those compositions calls to mind the way adults express themselves as they learn a new language.

Italian students spread across the globe who want to practice their written Italian have the opportunity to have their work corrected and then published on our weekly blog (https://pensierini.blog/). Corrections are made only to the grammar and orthography, not altering the original voice of the author, and allowing the native syntax to shine through.

Pensierini is in fact a literary undertaking. The idea is to bring a breath of fresh air to classical literary Italian: a language, which when used by foreign students, isn’t worn out by a lifetime of use, and is therefore full of expressive potential. This fact is supported by Jhumpa Lahiri, an American author and daughter of Bengali Indian immigrants, who decided to start writing in Italian: “I don’t have many words at all to express myself. I notice a state of deprivation. Yet, at the same time, I feel light and free. I rediscover the reason that I write, the joy alongside the need. I find again the pleasure I felt as a girl: putting words into a notebook that no one will read. In Italian I write without style, primitively. I am always in doubt. I have only my intentions, together with the blind, but sincere faith, of being understood and of understanding myself.” 

Why the Magazine

This magazine collects the best stories written by students, accompanied by illustrations, grammar tips, and statistics about Italy. Other than being recognition for the work done by these authors, it represents a tool for all those readers who want to practice reading literary texts written in easy to understand Italian. Approximately 2,000,000 people around the world study Italian. We think that it is interesting to further encourage the study and diffusion of Italian by means of writing, something that is often overlooked in language schools.  

Format

The magazine has been laid out and illustrated in a way to create an enjoyable reading experience and support the study of Italian. There are even gaps in the magazine, where students can relax and practice their written Italian, responding to various prompts.

About Us

Project Creator: Ugo Coppari. “I am a novelist, who has been teaching Italian to foreigners for the past 10 years. I decided to create this project to combine these two worlds and also because I was curious to know what was happening in the minds of different people across the globe and their typical daily experiences. More generally I would like to know about the ordinary lives parallel international events (political elections, governmental successes and crises, wars and immigration, warnings about climate change, problems of unemployment, developments in artificial intelligence, etc.) and how these events can influence the development of everyday lives. As if our blog could answer the question: how does life continue in spite of everything else?”.

The Community

The 27 authors published in the blog and in this magazine come from 16 different countries: the United States, England, Russia, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Syria, Nigeria, Mali, Argentina, Canada, and Turkey. Some of them still live in Italy.

Costs and Rewards

The funds collected in this campaign, will serve to cover the costs of the editing, illustrations and layout of the stories from the blog, as well as the creation of several video interviews, and of course the printing and shipping costs for the magazine, which will be given as a gift for those who decide to support our project.

Il progetto

Pensierini è un progetto nato per aiutare tutti gli studenti che vogliono imparare a scrivere in italiano o che più in generale vogliono imparare l’italiano scrivendo. I “pensierini” sono quei testi che scriviamo a scuola da bambini, testi la cui semplicità espressiva e lessicale ricordano il modo di esprimersi degli adulti quando imparano una lingua straniera. 

Gli studenti di italiano sparsi nel mondo che vogliono esercitarsi nella scrittura in italiano hanno la possibilità di ricevere una correzione al proprio testo, che poi verrà pubblicato settimanalmente nel nostro blog (https://pensierini.blog/). Una correzione puramente grammaticale e ortografica, che non altera la voce dell’autore, ma che al contrari lascia trasparire la sintassi della lingua madre. 

Pensierini è infatti anche un progetto letterario. L’idea è quella di apportare un po’ di freschezza alla lingua letteraria italiana: una lingua, quella usata dagli studenti stranieri, non ancora logorata dall’uso che se ne fa nel corso di un’intera vita e quindi carica di potenzialità espressiva. Come sostiene Jhumpa Lahiri, autrice statunitense di origine bengalese che ha deciso di adottare l’italiano come lingua per scrivere i suoi libri: “Non ho molte parole per esprimermi, tutt’altro. Mi rendo conto di uno stato di deprivazione. Eppure, al contempo, mi sento libera, leggera. Riscopro la ragione per cui scrivo, la gioia insieme all’esigenza. Ritrovo il piacere che provo fin da ragazzina: mettere delle parole in un quaderno, che nessuno leggerà. In italiano scrivo senza stile, in modo primitivo. Sono sempre in dubbio. Ho soltanto l’intenzione, insieme a una fede cieca ma sincera, di essere capita e di capire me stessa”. 

Perché la rivista 

Questa rivista raccoglie i migliori racconti scritti dagli studenti, accompagnati da illustrazioni e spunti grammaticali e statistiche riguardanti l’Italia. Oltre ad essere un premio per il lavoro svolto dagli autori, rappresenta anche uno strumento per tutti quei lettori che vogliono esercitarsi nella lettura di testi scritti in un italiano facilmente comprensibile. La lingua italiana è studiata da circa 2.000.000 di persone sparse nel mondo. Pensiamo sia interessante stimolarne ulteriormente lo studio e la diffusione attraverso una pratica, quella della produzione scritta, che troppo spesso viene trascurata nelle scuole di lingua. 

Formato

La rivista è stata impaginata e illustrata per consentire una lettura piacevole e quindi agevolare lo studio della lingua italiana. Sono stati inseriti anche degli spazi dove lo studente può rilassarsi nell’esercitarsi nella scrittura in italiano, rispondendo a domande di carattere universale.

Chi siamo

Ideatore: Ugo Coppari (1982). “Sono un autore di narrativa che da 10 anni si occupa di insegnamento dell’italiano a stranieri. Ho deciso di creare questo progetto per coniugare questi due mondi ma anche perché ero curioso di sapere cosa passasse nella testa della gente sparsa nel mondo e quali esperienze caratterizzavano le loro giornate. Più in generale mi sarebbe piaciuto sapere quale vita correva parallela alle vicende di respiro internazionale (elezioni politiche, accordi o crisi di governo, guerre e migrazioni, allarmi sul cambiamento climatico, questione occupazionale, sviluppi nel campo dell’intelligenza artificiale, etc.) e come queste vicende potevano influenzarne il proseguimento. Come se il nostro blog potesse rispondere alla domanda: come va avanti la nostra vita nonostante tutto il resto?”.

I fondi raccolti in questa campagna servono a coprire il servizio di correzione permanente dei testi pubblicati nel blog, il lavoro di illustrazione e impaginazione, la realizzazione delle interviste video, e ovviamente le spese di stampa e spedizione della rivista, che viene vista come un omaggio a chi decide di sostenere il nostro progetto.
