As long term Homestuck fans, and people who were raised in an age of large-scale social media boom, the long-distance friendships between the characters strikes a very particular chord. Homestuck was also revolutionary in the way it engaged with its fanbase. The real-time influence that being a fan of something has on the source material has never been so apparent. In the wake of Homestuck's finale, we decided to launch a large scale collaborative fan project dedicated to the Beta Kids, Homestuck's first set of characters, in the spirit of the way our world and our friendships have grown alongside those in the Homestuck canon. We selected 48 fanartists to work with out of a pool of hundreds of applicants and they have produced over 80 pages of illustrations.
This project is a charity project - 100% of the money that is raised beyond printing and shipping fees will be donated. No profit will be made off of any of this artwork in any way. The charity we've chosen to support is the National Center for Youth Law. The NCYL works to provide safe and steady futures for children by reforming legislation, whether it be increasing disability services, reforming immigration laws, or improving health services for children.
The budget for this project is incredibly simple. $2500 will be going towards the necessary printing and shipping required to fulfill our perks and do a full print run of the zine. The other $500 is our intended base donation for the NCYL. Any additional funding that overshoots our goal will be added to our donation. All of the artists volunteered their time for this project free of charge, and their only compensation will be receiving a gift copy of the zine.
Of the Printing an Shipping fees, $250 goes to getting hard-copy proofs made before the final printed batch, to ensure quality. $200 is required to get the books shipped from the printing facilities. The remaining $2050 is the printing fee.
