WHO IS IT FOR?
The Pi-Top kit is built with beginners in mind. Our goal is to make hardware as accessible as software is now, and a big part of that is making it beginner friendly.
![]()
No soldering is required to build Pi-Top and a beginner should expect to be able to complete the kit in an evening.
We want you to be able to create your own products and ideas. The Pi-Top kit is the start of a journey that will see you gaining the skills to build and code your own hardware.

MAKE REAL HARDWARE
Pi-Top focuses on teaching you the key skills to start making real hardware products. By combining Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design and 3D Printing we give you the knowledge to create any hardware product you want to make – by giving you the skills to create you are only limited by your imagination!
![]()
By using Pi-Top you will learn to make and control home automation devices, robots, and consumer electronics. We focus on teaching you transferable skills so that you can start making fast. We have trialled our learning process by traveling and teaching hardware innovation lessons to students around the UK.
We recently taught a group of students at King Edwards school Birmingham, UK how to create an LED circuit – code it with the PI-Top; and then applying those core skills the students were able to control a Raspberry Pi Robot. By learning in this way, you can begin to create basic hardware after the first Pi-Top lesson.

HATS!
We love that Raspberry Pi has released the HAT specification, it opens up a huge range of added functionality.
HATs are small addon boards you attach to the top of the Raspberry Pi. They are designed to give the Pi extra functionality.
Pi-Top is built with using HATs in mind. Space has been built in so HATs can be programmed and used anywhere with Pi-Top. Pi-Top will be released with three world first HATs - all adding a huge layer of functionality.
1) Pi-Top LCD Hat
One of the problems Pi-Top solves is that Raspberry Pi users traditionally have to settle for small screen sizes if they want a mobile Pi. Our solution in Pi-Top was to create an HDMI to LVDS bridge PCB. We have used these designs to create an LCD HAT that will allow the Raspberry Pi Model B+ to connect to any LCD screen that has a single channel LVDS interface (which is usually anything less than 1400x1050 resolution). The LCD HAT makes it easy to make displays and a range of mobile devices.
2) Robot HAT
We set out to create the easiest, most accessible, compact and functional Raspberry Pi Robot in the world. The Robot HAT sits on top of the Raspberry Pi inside your Pi-Top. You code it using Python and the Pi-Top lesson plans. Then simply remove the Raspberry Pi from Pi-Top, clip on a 3D printed chassis and your robot is ready to go!
In terms of functionality, the robot HAT gives you access to motor and servo drivers, digital-to-analogue converters, analog-to-digital converters, LEDs, IR proximity sensors and more. Due to how the HAT has been designed to clip into the 3D printed chassis, you will have access to other GPIOs so that you can customise the chassis to include even more sensors! The HAT also takes care of safely charging a lipo battery which keeps the Raspberry Pi running when you unclip it from Pi-Top.
3) Home Automation HAT
We have packed this HAT with loads of sensors so that you can retrieve information from the environment surrounding your Raspberry Pi, including pressure, humidity, temperature, touch, IR proximity and sound. The HAT also gives you access to several outputs, so that you can use the data you have collected to control the environment, including motor drives, a relay switch, a 7 segment digital readout and a buzzer. With this HAT you will be able to practice and learn how to use data collected by sensors to create automated devices. Learn to make hundreds of different products from this one HAT!
PI-TOP CUSTOMIZATION
Pi-Top is fully customisable! 3D print your own case on any 5" x 5" print bed, design and lazer cut custom Acrylic Slice's for your Pi-Top. Let your imagination run wild and make something completely unique to you!
