Short Summary
PlantBuilt is a team of vegan athletes who raise awareness about the benefits of veganism while also raising money for animal sanctuaries and vegan outreach. PlantBuilt was founded in the fall of 2012 by a group of physique and bodybuilding competitors with the shared goal of promoting a vegan diet in a sport where eating animal products is gospel and being vegan is mostly unheard of. It's easy to see one vegan win a show and cry "Genetics!"
But when you see a team of vegans all winning at once.....
PlantBuilt chose the Austin, Texas “Naturally Fit Super Show” as their debut. Although, the PlantBuilt team members only made up 10% of the competition, every single competitor placed, and the team ended up taking home 40% of the overall trophies. Not too shabby competing in a sport where it is standard to eat hundreds of grams of animal protein a day.
This year, we've expanded beyond just bodybuilding and have added a Crossfit and Powerlifting team as well. We now stand nearly 40 vegan athletes strong and will be competing at the Naturally Fit Super Show in Austin, Texas on July 26th and we plan to dominate. Again.
We use our vantage point as vegan athletes, to be spokespeople for a vegan diet, clearly dispelling the weak-scrawny-vegan myths and putting the "But where do you get your protein?" questions to rest. Every single team member also comes from the standpoint of ethical veganism as and it's beneficial impact on the planet.
As a unit, PlantBuilt is able to spread our message far and wide, while raising money for farm sanctuaries and vegan outreach programs. We utilize various forms of media to make our point about the benefits of vegan living in a way that is inviting and educational. Individually, we work with our communities to promote and teach a vegan lifestyle, while raising awareness (and money) for animal welfare.

What We Need & What You Get
What will my donation go towards?
All though PlantBuilt is a team of competitors, most team members mostly compete locally to keep costs of competing down. Despite the way it may appear on social media, no one on the team is a professional athlete. No one gets paid to train or compete, in fact, it is quite expensive, even at the local level. We are just regular people with day jobs that make time to train as best we can, and are mostly trying to make ends meet. Competing as a group is something that we need to do to prove, without a doubt, that you do not need to eat animals to be strong and fit, but for many it will be impossible to acquire the funds to do so on their own.
The costs of competing actually add up very quickly, especially when traveling to compete, which many members will be doing. Competing, even locally, has many hidden costs such as your federation membership, entry fee, polygraph testing, and tanning. Add to that the cost of flying in to get to the show and staying in a hotel as well as all of the costs of preparing for a show, such as a coach, posing classes, and even your suit, and you are looking at anywhere from $1,500 to nearly $4,000 per competitor.
Your donation will go largely to help cover these competitor costs. It is imperative that the whole team competes together to have the largest impact and we have hand chosen some of the best vegan athletes around, and in order to be able to do this, we need to generate the funds to ensure that everyone can actually get to the show.
As as non profit, the co-founders have been operating in the red, with no funding. PlantBuilt’s expenses include printing out flyers, booth fees, running our website, and bookkeeping, to name a few. If we continue on like this, PlantBuilt will no longer be able to continue and we will no longer be able to compete together as a team and have such a large impact for veganism.
The Impact
Slowly, but surely, we are changing the stereotypes. It is much more common to hear about athletes, even at a professional level, going vegan. Veganism has grown leaps and bounds in the past decade, but we still have a long way to go to change the way the world treats animals. We believe in a three-fold approach:
-Direct action to support animals at sanctuaries, rescues, and shelters.
-Outreach programs that teach people about the benefits of veganism and also expose the horrors of animals for profit businesses.
-Living as a glowing example of healthy vegans.
