Our planet has a huge plastic problem. We’ve produced 6.9 billion tons of plastic waste, and most of it winds up in our oceans and waterways. In the water, the plastic pollution breaks down into smaller pieces, and eventually degrade into tiny “microplastics,” or fragments as small as sesame seeds. These microplastics are found from the beach sand down to the deep ocean floor, and they greatly harm the aquatic ecosystem.
Microplastics have been shown to harm marine life when mistaken for food and were found inside every marine animal studied in a recent survey. But, that’s not the only problem. Humans end up eating the fish that have the microplastics in them and maybe consuming anywhere from 39,000 to 52,000 microplastic particles a year!
After winning the National Geographic Geo challenge competition, in the summer of 2019, we came up with a solution to tackle this problem.
Our team has designed an innovative solution to clean the microplastics in our rivers. We will be using a filter chamber to vacuum microplastics from the surface of the river. The microplastics will then be filtered in a collection system and clean water will flow back into the river.
But we need your help! With your donations, we will be able to implement our solution and make our rivers clear of microplastic!

How your support can help build our microplastic filtration system
You can support our filter by funding to us so we can make a working prototype by February 2020.
* Filter vacuum chamber - $2000
* Connecting accessories - $1000
* Main system - $7000
* Collection chamber - $5000
Lastly, we would like to highlight three ways our project can impact our rivers:
* Our project can clean the microplastics from our rivers and greatly help our marine ecosystems.
* Our project can improve our health and help us eat less plastic.
* Our project can stop plastic from entering the ocean and make the ocean less polluted and a better world to live in.
