Blue Water Initiative (BWI) is a South Florida based 501c3 nonprofit organization committed to the conservation of oceans and the rehabilitation of damaged reef ecosystems through community awareness, research, education, and active restoration.
BWI's current core project is the methodical removal of thousands of old "rogue" automobile tires at Osborne Reef - a failed 1970's artificial habitat comprised of over a million tires located off Ft. Lauderdale. These tires, drifting from the main field in storm surges, can negatively impact sensitive live corals and sponges in the vicinity.
While BWI's has already identified a remarkable number of rogue tires creeping away from the main field, storm surges like 2012's Hurricane Sandy can suddenly relocate tires causing them to further damage nearby coral reefs, smothering delicate marine life and destroying natural habitiat.
With your financial assistance, BWI will conduct a survey dive in November and/or December 2012 to determine the number of newly deposited tires threatening natural reef by Hurricane Sandy's storm surge. If conditions allow, we will remove the most dangerous marine debris with the expert help of specially trained salvage divers.
BWI is hoping to raise our goal by the end of November with a chance to receive a $500 matching gift from Indiegogo in November. As a flexible grassroots organization, we will do good work with whatever funds we receive, and the more money we raise beyond our goal, the more we can do in 2012 and 2013.
Please see our "perks" on the right for premiums in return for your contribution. Any amount you can donate helps our cause. And since BWI is a 501c3 Nonprofit Group, your gift is tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
