The Send Summary
The Valdez Ice Climbing Festival is an annual event which helps support our mission to care for and build trails as well as provide outdoor opportunities and outdoor education through clinics and workshops for all. In 2021, we've also created the Connect Scholarship Fund to make the VICF22 more accessible. Come Send it with us in 2022 - we want to see you there!
What We Need & What You Get
We need love from the community which also shows our grantors that the clinics, workshops, and trail work we provide are valuable to residents and visitors.
In exchange for your show of support, we want to give you the best experience ever! Let us help you plan your trip - whether you're full on dirt bag or diva, we got you covered.
Your funds go to supporting humans and the wild lands around us. We definitely are into supporting people's dreams - so to all the outside explorers, adventurers, those who are taking and took the time to learn ice climbing and safety proficiency, We Support You!
The Impact
Your support maintains the trails which makes routes available not only for climbers, but fat bikers, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. This takes fuel, tools, manpower, and sometimes large equipment. But this is just what we love to do!
Winter Maintenance: we have community members that go out and pack snow and test routes. Of course, sometimes volunteers are unavailable. Either way we supply fuel or reimburse for time or other supplies that might be required. Often the winter will create some damage (and sometimes we have to respond to vandals), which will require additional repairs and maintenance. Also, to access some of our trails and camping areas we have to hire people to plow. All in all, it can be a lot!
Spring Maintenance: When the green starts growing back, we've got to send people out to trim branches, work the dirt, and make sure there are no hazards as well as clean up from the thaw (that said, we love our dog owners who pick up after their furry fam). Also, since spring still means snow, sometimes we still need to plow snow. We also have port-a-potties, garbage and cabin/ campground areas that need cleaning and revitalizing. During the summer months, we require a campground host as well to help make things run smoothly beyond steady cell reach.

Risks & Challenges
2020 certainly provided some challenges for us. We created a COVID mitigation plan and stuck with it. Part of that plan was getting feedback from the participants of our near sold out event - and we are more than pleased to report no incidents.
Traditionally we have received support from the city and other grantors. This is never a guarantee. Fees alone will not prove a sustainable event which is why we reach out, hold fund raisers, and find other sponsors! We can only hope Lowe, Sterling, Rab, Nikwax, Black Diamond, HyperLite, Petzl, The Prospector, The Fat Mermaid, The North Face and other businesses will continue to be a part of this fantastic event.
