Overview
Our Greek folk idioms are going to disappear... Will you let it happen? Will you let our children in the dark of lack of knowledge, exposed to globalization without any fixed cultural points? Take action with me today and fund the publishing of my new book, preserving the local Euboean idiomatic Greek language!

Short Summary

After my first effort in 2014, to present to you in a book the traditional costumes of North Evia and the folk culture linked with it, - which was published thanks to your support! (find it in the link here)-I come back to ask you again to support the publishing of my second book on Greek Euboean Folk Civilization, dedicated on our local Euboean idiomatic Greek language.

This local language of the northern part of Evia Island is important, as it is an idiom consisting mostly of preserved ancient Greek words that were slightly amended through the years. This happened because of the area’s isolation, as until the mid 20th century the only access to northern Evia Island was by small boats, and the communication and cultural exchange with other people was little.

I first realized that my fellow citizens and I had a different manner of speaking when I was studying at the university. It was then that I discovered many of the words I used while speaking were unknown to my classmates. For me, this language seemed natural since I had grown up hearing these words from my grand-parents in my mother’s village and from my parents at home. I started collecting words and idiomatic phrases 13 years ago, and I now have  a collection of more than 3000, along with their history and the stories behind them! Each word or phrase is unique, and constitutes a nostalgic part of our Greek roots and a piece of our local history!

In the book, we chose to combine the words along with the stories in the idiomatic language, told by our grand-parents to the recorders of the early 20th century, that first tried to capture the idiom, when people talked in this way more vibrantly. I also wrote by myself in the local idiom, and include them in the book, seven theatrical act plays which can inspire Greek Teachers and be dramatized by Greek Schools or Greek Folk Dancers, to induce children to get in touch with the idiomatic language and take a look at the way of living of our ancestors, while the older ones will be reminded of nostalgic memories from the past. The book is also documented by its bibliography, consisting of about 200 references from old books and personal testimonies.

The writer, Asimina Nteliou, comes from the island of Evia in Greece, where she lives. Passionate of the Greek tradition, she is researching the authentic aspects of Greek folk civilization, photographing and recording all the wisdom and morals of the Greek islanders, before the old ones die and the knowledge is lost. Her first published book, “The Traditional Greek Costumes of North Evia” which preserved the knowledge related to the folk costumes and jewels of Evia, and links it with the customs and the ancient and byzantine origin of Greek people, was honored with the Kaftantzogleio Award 2014 by the Faculty of Philosophy of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens. She is married to Theofanis Ramiotis, a goldsmith and jewel conservator, who reproduces exact copies of the Greek traditional jewels by old techniques and designs contemporary jewels inspired from the Greek traditional culture. They both share the vision to preserve the Greek folk civilization and promote it by a series of books and expositions all over the world, highlighting it as world heritage.

What We Need & What You Get

My homeland, Evia, is not as famous as other Greek Islands; however, it has a less known and amazing civilization. Researchers have found that the roots of the Latin alphabet, spread all over the world, are based on the ancient Chalkidean alphabet, through the Chalkis’ colonies which are located in Italy (Chalkis is the capital of Evia).

Our local idiomatic Euboean Greek language, which is the evolution of the ancient one, is important and should be recorded, preserved, and not allowed to disappear. As the years pass and we Greeks mix with people from other countries, we tend to adopt mostly the foreign words rather than preserve our local ones.  In a world that we all tend to act and be the same, speaking our local idiom, makes us a bit somehow different. In this way we become a part of our homeland’s history, a fruit from our ancestors’ tree and a seed for our own children.

This book aims to be a small stone to saving and preserving the wall of the Greek North Euboean idiom and keep it safe to be transmitted to our children. In this way we can offer to our children a rare linguistic material, and introduce them to our roots and our continuity as a nation. That is why I encourage you to fund this book so it will be published and reach as many people as possible.

In order to publish this book, some essential publishing work must be done. The cost of the book's design, printing and distribution is 650 Euros or 700 USD. Furthermore, the circulation of the printed book requires printing at least a small batch of premium quality books. This is planned to cost 250 Euros or 270 USD. If the campaign is successful, it will be available in e-book format, which is estimated to cost around 350 Euros or 380 USD.

Every person that helps us gets something. Whether a thank you note on an old fashioned post card depicting Euboea, a contemporary Evia or Greece design pendant, or a valuable piece of jewelry, which will be an exact copy of the traditional art of Greece.

The Impact

Publishing this book in both printed and ebook formats is a significant way to save, learn, protect, study and continue the traditional Greek folk language and deliver it to new generations of people, which is not only a matter of a small social group, but of world heritage.

Moreover, the writer will be able through the book's presentations to sensitize people all over Greece and world, on the preservation of the Greek idioms. The same happened with her first book "The Traditional Greek Costumes of North Evia". The last two years people all over Greece and world learned more about the stunning Greek Folk Art and were introduced to unknown traditional Greek costumes. The presentations and their videos on Youtube and Facebook were also a great advertisement for Greek Folk Culture and Art and Evia Island. You can see the writer's presentations the last two years  in this link

Risks & Challenges

There is no actual risk. If anyone helps us, he/she will receive the perk of his/her choice and our gratitude. The book is planned to be published in March/April 2017 even if this campaign is unsuccessful. Any financial help, or even just sharing our campaign with your friends, is greatly appreciated and makes you a special person interested in saving our Greek heritage.
