*UPDATES* (May 2nd, 2016)

Many thanks to our backers! We've reached our goal before the deadline!!! In the meantime, we're still calling for more supports:)

Our Story

Living in the developed countries, we have better chances for education than in the past, as our society works hard to provide better education.

Meanwhile, that’s not the case for Marshall Islands.

Marshall Islands is one of the most isolated place from the rest of the world. The small country has unusual obstacle of Negative chain in education;

  • Lack of education opportunity for talented youth
  • Lack of value added industries to generate tax
  • Lack of education investment

The majority of Marshall children can not use even basic math.

Deprived of resources and teachers who obtain sufficient skills to teach, Marshall children are isolated from evolution of education. These children become adults one day without skills that should be learnt in schools. A growth in high value-added industries is unlikely. This destitution of skillful human resources is also interrelated with the ineffective usage of federal investment on education - leading back to unqualified teachers and lack of administered systems.

How To End The Negative Chain?

So far, the Marshallese and foreign governments took various approaches, such as providing free PC. However national education level remains unchanged.

Through observations in classrooms, we found PC has been not ideal for a developing country where computer literacy of teachers is not high.

1) Rethink the device: Single purpose Tablet

Our final conclusion is, personalized tablet is the best option among what can be taken. Instead of installing computers that are mainly used for children to play online games without teachers who can teach effectively, personalized tablets enable children to study individually.

2) Personalize learning contents

There are significant gap between students in terms of achievement. Some concept requires understanding of other concept which is already taught in class (e.g, to learn multiplication, you need to know addition). This makes teaching and learning harder, and generates tons of lackluster.

We searched tools that are adaptive to different grade and academic levels of students. We collaborate with volunteer engineer to personalize contents to solve this.

What Have We Done So Far?

We already started to change children's life in small scale pilot. Japan Team is composed of Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) and two local elementary schools. Faculties at Ajeltake Elementary School (AES) and Woja Elementary School (WES). Together with teachers and parents at these supportive schools, we already started small pilots of tablet learning, and our student marked significant jump, not only in scores, but also in self-esteem improvement.  The largest local newspaper widely covered significant progress of students who enrolled in the pilots.

How Will Your Money Be Used?

We need your support to install more of our tablets to an increasing number of Marshallese children. Your contribution will provide 1 tablet per $200 to elementary schools in Majuro, the capital of the Marshall Islands. These tablets will help opening up more access to education for every child, and boost their achievement level. The acceleration will end the negative chain, and help the Marshallese community to maintain its national economic stability. Your money, ultimately, will produce future leaders of the nation.
