Hockey and Canadian culture are wrapped around each other more so than any other sport-culture relationship. Soccer belongs to the world, the USA's interests are divided. But for us, hockey is everything. It's how we grew up, whether we played the game or not. It's the people we meet, the relationships we have, friendships and hatreds, and even the "tough-it-out" attitude that pushes Canadian perseverance, sometimes to the point of detriment. Using true stories from the creator's 20+ years of playing and coaching, we look to create a long-awaited realistic take on what it's like to be a teenager under the spotlight in Canada.
We recognize that the ol' "Canadian's wanting to talk about hockey" thing may be tired or cliche, but what you may not realize is the lack of REAL windows into what this dramatic culture actually is. We are tired of seeing our stories dumbed-down into clean-cut tales of goofy Canadians that bring their Timmy's to the rink, say "eh" to all their friends and sit down for a friendly game of puck. I mean, those things do happen, but the game and the drama surrounding it are hardly friendly.
We want to showcase how this level of hockey really is, and explore both the good and the bad. The triumphs of kids on the bubble becoming stars. The ethics of putting in an injured player when you know you shouldn't. Making life-long personal connections. Kids (and parents) screaming obscenities at each other, coaches and referees. The parents who just can't let go. The family drama both created by and surrounding the sport.
We want the series to serve as a sober reminder that these are kids. Teenagers. Playing a game. And whether they want to be professional athletes or not, we need to think about how we view and treat them.
This is to be a love letter to Canadian culture, with full Canadian crew, cast and music.
What we need: $50,000.
$50,000?! Why?: To shoot a pilot episode for the show in Calgary, AB, and to market it thereafter to distributors as a potential series. Shooting this will require expensive gear and location rentals, and costly materials to increase production quality such as team jerseys/equipment, not to mention plenty of volunteered time from our crew! We will also be seeking to license music from Canadian artists.
What you get: OOoooo Prizes! To thank you for your contributions, we have a series of gifts we would like to send to you! The more you donate, the better the gift! Pucks, mini-sticks, character hockey cards, even customized team jerseys!
What a donor's impact will be on this project is considerably important. To keep the themes as grounded in Canadian culture as possible, these donations will go a long way in securing music rights, ensuring that on-ice action can be as realistic as possible, and the potential involvement of NHL players/alumni.
The reliance on the support of community in which the project will shoot cannot be understated. We want to make sure that the stories come across as genuine as possible, and for that reason we will be seeking to use local talent with both performance and hockey ability. For this action to be real, stunt supervisors and coordinators will have to be involved. We will also be shooting in a very specific location, for which the costs may be prohibitive.
If you can't contribute funds but still want to support the project that is okay! We appreciate any and all support. You can help us by spreading the word to your hockey and film loving family and friends, or you can contact us directly at ____ if you have any other way you think you would like to contribute. Thank you so much for your support!
