PUNKura* is a new Sarajevan magazine that seeks to witness and promote the city’s subcultural life, elevating the work of the city's best artists, writers, poets, musicians, and skaters both domestically and abroad.
Before the war, Sarajevo had an established and unique cultural identity, had a scene that gave outstanding art, music, and film to Yugoslavia and the world. The presence of a physical magazine on Sarajevo's streets can, we believe, contribute to the creation of a new identity in this city.
Sarajevo seems just about due for a renaissance.

Our motivation for the project emerges from the lack of any popular media for Sarajevan youth and our belief that the city needs and deserves such a magazine.
There’s simply no accessible venue that highlights the alternative art, culture, and ways of living that exist here. There’s no magazine that covers topics of real importance to the lives of young people from their own perspective.
As a result, PUNKura* has a big gap to fill. We will write about music, street art, nightlife, and skating, as well as mental health, relationships, and the politics of public space. We hope the magazine will become a platform of communication around which creative people of all generations can gather.
We need to be able to make a great magazine for any of those goals to be achievable. And we think we did.
If you’d like to see for yourself how we did, get your copy of...

As our first offering to the public, our Special Edition is an introduction to both our magazine and, for those unfamiliar, to Sarajevo’s subcultural life.

-
essays by Arnel ‘Šaran’ Šarić, Gabriela Manda Seith, Sam Sabourin, and Boriša Mraović

The theme that connects many, but not all the stories and work in the Special Edition is the issues surrounding public space (and the lack of it) in Sarajevo. Musicians, skaters, and intellectuals give their perspectives about how people can use public space and resist the threat of privatization, while many of the artworks make their own comment.
Why are we asking for your contributions?
With this crowdfunding campaign, we are gathering money to help us create and release the next four issues of PUNKura*. The funds we raise will allow us to solidify the foundations we have built while preparing this Special Issue.
Here are some of the upcoming expenses this campaign will go towards covering
- publishing costs
- payments for staff
- payments for contributors
- space for our offices and the creation of a small cultural hub
- marketing and promotion
- design materials
- technical equipment
We are turning to the public to help us build something that can last while, crucially, remaining independent. We can't do that on our own, we are going to need support from our city and the people who care about it. If you want to have a cool magazine in Sarajevo, you need to help make it possible.
Thank you for reading, we hope that you’ll support us.
