SUMMARY!
Over a year in the making, Purple Electric Play (PEP!) is Machine Project’s
newest collaboration with visionary playwright and psychic Asher Hartman.
Commissioned specifically for the Machine Project’s 17 seat underground
theatre, PEP! will delight and bewilder the audience with performances of
mind-melting intensity.
In a mix of black light theater and black magic, PEP!
follows two underground entertainers, THE VITAL ORGAN and THE STAR, as they
step in and out of rough and ridiculous political histories, assisted by their
pals, THE AUDIENCE, four naive and playful puppets, LO-PHAT, DONKEY, SALAD BAR
and STARVATION luring their live audience deeper into the morass of questions and
confrontations that arise from memories of injustice and revolt.
PEP! explicitly leverages an
audience’s expectation of diversion and excitement to explore the relationship
of the creative class to privilege and power, both as resistors and provocateurs.
Are you the kind of person who wishes Machine Project was
just a little more intense, overwhelming and delirious? Have we got a play for
you!
WHAT WE NEED AND WHAT
YOU GET!
With a
combination of this campaign and Machine Project funding, our goal is to raise
$20,000 for the entire production of PEP!.
The largest portion of the budget is our
cast and crew. Funds will go directly to support an extremely talented team
with many artist collaborators who are equally dedicated to Asher’s vision. The
most colorful budget items are also the most over the top features, for example:
Music70's lighted disco weardiapers
50 yds of red sparkle fabric
Puppets
Black light
Comedy
Levitation
Black Art Magic
Elaborate dance moves
Machine Project has invested $10,000, we only need $10,000
more - think of your donation as the magic sparkle that will make this
production as over-the-top as possible. Our past three collaborative
productions with Asher have sold out within days of tickets being released,
your donation, at higher levels, assure a ticket to the show!

ABOUT MACHINE PROJECT:
Machine Project, an informal, non-profit, educational institution located in a
storefront space in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, is a group of
people working together to create, study and share new forms of culture and
ways of living. We collaborate with artists, thinkers and local communities to
produce non-commercial projects that investigate art, performance, technology,
science, music, literature and new ideas for creative engagement. We believe an
organization can exist as a machine for thinking together.
