Short Summary
Hi. I'm J. Neil Schulman. My first novel, Alongside Night, was published in 1979 when I was 26 and in 2014 -- at age 61 -- my adaptation of Alongside Night into a movie (I wrote the screenplay, produced, and directed) is being released into movie theaters.
Alongside Night was the first book to introduce the libertarian philosophy of Agorism -- the idea that only securing free markets, not taking political action, can secure freedom -- to the reading public. Now I'm introducing the same idea to the movie-going public.
Alongside Night is the story of the final economic collapse of the United States as seen through the eyes of 16-year-old Elliot Vreeland, searching for his missing Nobel-laureate-economist father, and the mysterious teenage "Lorimer" whom Elliot meets in a black-market underground, whose own father might be the reason Elliot's father is missing.
Kevin Sorbo (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, God's Not Dead) stars as Elliot's father, Dr Martin Vreeland.
During an interview with me on the Ron Paul Channel, Dr. Ron Paul (who appears as himself in the movie) praised Alongside Night by emphasizing, "I'd like to mention to the viewers, hopefully when you get the chance take a look at this movie, read the book. Neil's worked hard in the libertarian movement!"
Alongside Night has been playing in select theaters but we're now ready to roll it out in general movie-theater release across the U.S. We're planning to put the Alongside Night movie into a rolling release in 20 cities -- one theater in each city per week.
If we don't do a wide theatrical release first Alongside Night won't gain enough word-of-mouth to interest stores like WalMart, Best Buy, Target, and Kroger Supermarkets to carry the DVD, for Red Box to make the DVD available for rental, and for cable and satellite systems to make Alongside Night available for Video on Demand.
Putting a movie into theaters and advertising it so people will buy tickets costs money. We had the money to make the movie but don't have the money to distribute it.
That's where we need your help.
For each $10 donation you'll be entitled to one movie ticket in one of the theaters we put the movie into. If you contribute $50 you'll not only get a movie ticket but also a DVD when it's released in 2015. If we can raise the minimum $100,000 for this campaign we can put Alongside Night into 20 movie theaters across the U.S. If we raise more we can expand into additional cities. The money raised will be spent on renting movie theaters and spreading the word so the minimum number of tickets will sell in each city.
