Heroes Marathon needs Pylons
The World Alzheimer's Day Run For Heroes Marathon is in it 4th year and we have a special and iconic course for the race. Through the small town community of Amherstburg Ontario along the Detroit River and through a historic battle Fort Malden it is a stunning little race. We have under 2,000 competitors for the race weekend that travel in from all around North America.
Run For Heroes Marathon is named after my mother, she took care of my dad who had Alzheimer's for 22.5 years and kept him at home for 19 of them as the primary care giver. My mom is my Hero. The beauty of the race is you name your own hero as it is deeply personal and rewarding.
My name is Chris Uszynski and I founded the World Alzheimer's Day Run For Heroes Marathon 8 years ago with the hope of raising money for Caregiver Support programs in our local area. It started as an ultra marathon and grew to 100K long runs then after an illness I grounded it in the Town of Amherstburg with Kids run, 5K, 10K, 21K(half Marathon) and 42K(full Marathon) - Boston Qualifier to share with the World. To date we have raised almost a quarter million for the local Alzheimer Society for caregiver support programs like Day Away and In Home Respite.
We need this campaign to continue the 42K Marathon course of the run.
We need to buy our own Pylons and keep the infrastructure local
The Marathon course is an in and out and requires 2,000 pylons to safely block off a lane for runners. We currently rent them for over $10,000 for the day from a firm in Toronto. In Southern Ontario no municipalities or rental companies has 2,000 pylons because they rely on contractors to own them. Road contractors cannot guarantee them to us as they are in use in construction. To close off a road and meet Ministry of Transportation guidelines as well as compiling with the laws and insurance requirements you must use a specific pylon -TC-51B. No pylons No Race. If we buy them for $45,000 (they cost $20 each pus transportation) then we can use them year after year and sustain this race for decades to come. It is one of those low use, highly required assets that a grant would be perfect for but none are available to apply for.
The Run For Heroes Marathon is Canada's most Southern Boston Qualifier and is one the Regions big athletic draws to our communities. Our region and small town needs the tourism and economic boost that our Marathon provides. We provide positive good health messaging and good habits for a future running generation.

For donations over $5,000 we will name a 5K portion of the course after you or a company. All mapping will detail it as well as posting signage on the course to acknowledge the course.
