Overview
This one-woman show reveals the life behind the limelight of Hollywood’s Queen of Technicolor Maureen O’ Hara. The show will explore the struggles O' Hara faced in her personal life as well as her efforts in standing up to the studio bosses who often expected more than a performance from their stars. In light of the sexual harassment scandals that have surfaced over the past year, it is high time that Maureen’s story, which sheds light on what went on behind the scenes even then, is told.

"QUEEN OF TECHNICOLOR"

-An Intimate Journey with Maureen O' Hara

  • WHO ARE YOU? Thanks for asking! My name is Elaine O' Dwyer. I am an Irish actress who trained at the Guildford School of Acting. I am currently living in London. I previously trained and worked as a primary school teacher in Ireland.
  • WHEN DID YOU WRITE THE PLAY? Good question! Having read Maureen's autobiography last November (2017), I made the decision to write the play. She was too interesting and captivating a person to simply brush past. I spent the last six months researching Maureen's life, watching her films, observing her interviews and even meeting her close friends. I also managed to get my hands on her own personal vanity case which I will use in the show.
  • WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU CAN PLAY MAUREEN? I can relate to Maureen's character in many ways -her stubborn temperament, brashness, open-heartedness, naivety and fragility. Like Maureen, I took part in many performance competitions as a child and was part of a musical family. O' Hara and I would have got on well as children as we were both tom-boys.  I spent my childhood in wellingtons on the farm -not in pretty dresses! Maureen and I share the same outspoken nature; I think this boldness stems from our shared star-sign -we are both Leo the lion. I also happen to be a fiery redhead.
  • WHO CAN RELATE TO THIS STORY? O’ Hara’s story is one that everyone can relate to and be inspired by. A dear friend of Maureen once said “She was more than an actress. She was a person. A real person”. She was a loving mother, boisterous daughter, affectionate sister, troubled wife, loyal friend and a wonderful leading lady. Her life was thrilling yet challenging, successful yet heart-breaking. She stood up for herself during a time when the casting couch was common and when studio bosses in Hollywood controlled their stars. She went through life with plenty knocks along the way but no matter how bad things got, she never lost hope and she never stopped fighting. Anyone who has ever felt like giving up will be invigorated by O’ Hara’s story.
  • WHY DO YOU NEED ME? I need you to help support the costs of putting this remarkable story on stage. I want to tell Maureen’s story in the best way possible which means hiring a creative team and giving Maureen’s life on stage the legs it deserves. She was a woman of strength and beauty and I feel a sense of duty to honor that. In supporting this project, you will be giving this show the best chance it can get before it embarks on a national tour in 2019. I want to tell her story in an honest, respectful and theatrically compelling way. Your support will help me to bring the truth of this remarkable woman to the stage and to the world.

If I do not reach my entire goal.... I will use the money collected to pay my creative team as best I can. The show must go on and if that means doing the show to a smaller scale, then so be it.

The life of this show...

QUEEN OF TECHNICOLOR opens in November at Belltable Arts Centre, Limerick. This will mark the third year anniversary of Maureen O' Hara's passing.

As the old Irish saying goes: "Tús maith leath na hoibre" - a good start is half the work. Once the word about QUEEN OF TECHNICOLOR goes out, I am confident that the show will have a long life. It is my aim to tour the show around Ireland in 2019 and take the show to New York in 2020 to mark O' Hara's centenary (Maureen was born in 1920). Maureen O' Hara's fanbase is global and I have already received interest from overseas about the show. This show is the first of its' kind and is highly relevant in today's current climate with the 'Times Up' and 'Me Too' movements.

When I am passionate about something, I put everything into it. I would really appreciate your help in sharing this story with the masses.

Ok, but what about the risks?

As with everything in life, nothing is guaranteed. I cannot guarantee that my goal of €12000 will be reached and therefore I cannot guarantee that my creative team will be paid what they deserve. If they feel that the money raised is not enough to pay them, I will have to find other ways and means.

I can guarantee however that those who donate to the cause will receive the perks regardless.

No money? No problem!

As an actor/writer, I am well aware that money isn't always flowing. If you are not in a position to support the show, you can help in other ways.

  • WORD OF MOUTH: You could tell your friends, family and/or strangers on the bus about the show
  • FACEBOOK:  You could like/share the Facbook page @OHARAPLAY
  • TWITTER: You could share a tweet about the show and tag @OHARAPLAY on twitter
  • HELPER: You could help distribute flyers in cafes/restaurants/venues closer to the time and/or help to sell programmes on the night of the show

I will be forever grateful for your support.
