The last version of RAWGraphs is already 2 years old.
During these years we have collected a lot of feedback and suggestions from many users and we think it’s time to move forward and start working on a new and improved version with more features. To do so, we need your support. But don’t worry: RAWGraphs will always be open and free for everyone.
What is RAWGraphs?
It's a free and open source software to easily visualize your spreadsheets.
The idea behind RAWGraphs is to provide a tool that allows people without coding skills to produce visualizations on their own. Originally conceived for graphic designers to complete a series of tasks that were unavailable in other tools, it evolved into a platform that provides simple ways to map data dimensions onto visual variables. Basically RAWGraphs allows users to easily and quickly create data visualizations that can be exported and edited in a vector graphics software (such as Adobe Illustrator and Sketch).
Users aren’t asked to register or pay any type of fee to use it and anyone can access and modify the code as well.
The tool has been successfully adopted by many users around the world (about 4,000 unique visitors every week) and won the award for “Most Beautiful” project and “Gold medal” for tools at the Kantar information is beautiful awards 2014.
Since 2017 the project has been maintained by DensityDesign Research Lab and Calibro, a design studio founded by two former members of the research lab. Since we are now entering a new phase for RAWGraphs, we thought we would enlarge our team and involve a more experienced partner in the development of robust and open-source software: Inmagik, a studio based in Bergamo (Italy), focused on the development of web applications, mobile apps, data management systems and interactive user experiences.

Why a crowdfunding?
At this point, you are probably asking yourself: “Why are you asking for help if the software is already online?”
The answer is quite simple. We want to update the technological stack of the software that is now outdated and add a bunch of new features.
This is why we decided it was time to find a sustainable way to maintain the project. The goal is to fairly compensate the people that work on the project, enlarge the team and dedicate the right amount of time and resources on it. Since we want to keep the software open and free for everyone, we need your support to give RAWGraphs new life. RAWGraphs is also widely used in education and research by a lot of students and researchers in their data-driven projects.
Instead of selling licenses or premium versions we’d rather keep the tool open and free for everyone.
Your contribution can make that happen. By contributing, you are not only supporting the RAWGraphs team but you are also helping thousands of other people like students and young professionals to benefit from a 100% free and open software.
What happens if we reach our goal?
In the last years, we collected a lot of feedback and suggestions from our users and thanks to your contribution this is what we are planning to do if we reach.
1 - More charts
We want to add more charts to our tool. We are planning to add some basic charts (such as stacked bar charts, line charts and matrix) and integrate some new and unconventional ones.
2 - Save your projects and templates
Everytime you create a chart with RAWGraphs you always have to start from scratch... and sometimes it can be frustrating. With RAWGRaphs 2.0 we would like to add the possibility to save customized templates (colors, sizes, etc) so that you can reuse them for multiple visualizations without having to input the options again. Projects can also be saved (your data and your configuration) in a standalone file so that you can start where you left off without losing any of your progress.
3 - More control and more options
The visualizations created with RAWGraphs often need a lot of refinement with other graphic design softwares. With RAWGRaphs 2.0 we would like to make your life easier. These are some of the improvements we have in mind:
Better management of labels
Possibility to export legends
Aesthetically improved charts
Possibility to add annotations
An SVG structure easier to manage and polish in vector editing softwares
4 - Increased performance
Redefining and re-engineering our technical stack will allow us to develop a version of RAWGraphs that will allow to upload more data and experience less bugs.
5 - Better integration with SPARQL query
We already did some experiments querying Wikidata and it’s super cool. We would like to make this process easier and more accessible to everyone.
6 - Make it easier to create and add new charts
More documentations and ready to use templates based on a completely refactored JavaScript library.
7 - More educational material to teach and learn RAWGraphs
Since RAWGraphs is widely used in many educational programs we want to improve our learning section with more tutorials and more samples. We will also create more material and guides for developers to learn how to add custom charts and participate in the development of the tool.
What happens if we exceed our goal?
We have a lot of things in mind to improve RAWGraphs. If your contributions exceed our goal (33,000 €) we will have more time to spend on the design and development of RAWGraphs 2.0.
Here is our dream to-do list:
More charts, more charts, more charts!
Add the possibility to make simple data transformations (filter, geocoding, etc)
RAWGraphs App: the offline and stand-alone version of the application that you can install on your computer
Export to GIST
And last but not least...Interactive charts! Yes, we would love to add the possibility to create interactive charts and have an easy way to embed them in web pages and interactive projects.
Risks and challenges
RAWGraphs is a pretty simple software. Adding more functionalities will make the software more complex (to design and develop) and we need time to do so. The risk is that the schedule we have in mind could become tight and the new version will require more time than expected. But don’t worry, the latest stable version of RAWGraphs will be always available online and, if you support us with 50€ you will have early access to the beta version.
What if we don’t succeed? The campaign will be anyway flexible, meaning that even if we won't reach that goal, we will work according to the founding we manage to collect.
Other Ways You Can Help
We understand that some might not have the means to contribute, but that doesn't mean they can't help:
