A New Era for Razor Clamming

Recreational razor clamming is enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people each year. From Alaska to British Columbia, from Washington to Oregon, and all the way down to California, families and friends gear up, dig clams, and gather to share stories, techniques, and recipes. Razor clamming on the Pacific Coast is a time-honored tradition that connects generations.

By founding the Razor Clam Society, we hope to bring clammers together and connect our community to current marine biology research and the governmental departments managing the environment, licensing, and fish & wildlife. The clamming community has a lot to talk about, let’s not clam up.

Our Mission

The Razor Clam Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting recreational razor clamming. We want to celebrate today’s clammers and secure razor clam habitat for the enjoyment of future generations. Our efforts focus on four things: 1) conservation; 2) representing the clamming community to local and state government; 3) connecting local economies to the broader clamming community; and 4) highlighting how much fun responsible clamming practices can be.

  1. We will work with governmental agencies and scientific organizations to promote and communicate responsible razor clamming practices, sustainable harvesting, habitat stewardship, and ocean issues. We want to make this vital information and current razor clam research more accessible to razor clammers.

  2. We will serve as a voice to legislative bodies when called upon to express our opinions about key issues related to razor clamming.

  3. The Razor Clam Society will aggregate information about razor clam digging dates and locations, license fees, harvest statistics, and other vital information. We want to make this information readily available to clamming enthusiasts so that it’s easy to go clamming. The Razor Clam Society will engage with local communities that host razor clamming and razor clam festivals to more widely promote their activities to our membership and the general public. The Razor Clam Society will use its profits to support razor clam related research and management in the form of grants to individuals and organizations.

  4. Responsible clamming is happy clamming. We will feature best practices on our website and in our literature, share recipes, photos and stories, and cultivate a connected community of clammers that will last.

By ardently pursuing these goals, we know the Razor Clam Society can serve the unmet and unaddressed needs of razor clammers, razor clams, and other enthusiasts. No one will have to dig alone and no one will have to dig in the dark—unless they want to, of course.

What the Experts Say

"We appreciate the value of working with stakeholder user groups and are excited to have a group [the Razor Clam Society] dedicated to the Pacific razor clam."

-Dan Ayres, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Coastal Shellfish Manager

I look forward to working with the Razor Clam Society to gain a better understanding of the status of California’s recreational razor clam fishery”

-Peter Kalvass, California Department of Fish and Wildlife Senior ES Marine Invertebrates

"I wish you were around 10 years ago!"

-Robyn Unruh, Chairwoman, 2015 Long Beach Razor Clam Festival

Why the Razor Clam Society is So Important

"Decades ago, as many as 300,000 people each year came to the coast to harvest upward of 13 million razor clams, according to WDFW. But disease and overharvesting hurt clam populations in the 1980s. In the 1990s, outbreaks of domoic acid, a potent marine toxin, limited harvesting in Washington. In 2009, WDFW estimated that 250,000 came to dig, harvesting 2.5 to 3 million clams, sometimes with only 15 to 35 days out of the entire year to do so."

-Chinook Observer, April 15, 2015

"A study by the University of Washington and the NOAA West Coast Center for Oceans and Human Health in 2008 broke down the economic benefits to coastal communities, looking at how much visitors hoping to dig their limit of razor clams spend on hotel accommodations, camping, restaurant visits, groceries, gas and oil, transportation, ferry tolls and other retail transactions. A canceled season affecting all clam digging on the coast could cost communities almost $22 million in lost revenue, they concluded."

- Daily Astorian, April 15, 2015

“Ten Thousand Clams”: What We Need & What You Get

The Razor Clam Society seeks to raise funds via IndieGoGo in order to formally establish itself as a registered nonprofit organization, create an attractive and user-friendly website for members and the public to visit, and produce promotional materials for members and other enthusiasts.

We seek $10,000 to achieve these goals.

As a contributor to this initial fundraising push, you will have the opportunity to receive Razor Clam Society membership for one year, a special Founding Member numbered ID card, a Razor Clam Society decal for your vehicle, and an embroidered Razor Clam Society stocking cap to wear out on the beach when digging.  Please see the specific Perk levels to find out what you will receive for your generous contribution.

Razor Clam Society Members will also receive a discount on Razor Clam Society logo headwear and apparel that will be sold to support the organization’s mission.

Members of the Razor Clam Society will be invited to exclusive social and educational events coordinated with fish & wildlife administrators. In the future, we expect to form chapter groups to fulfill the specific local needs of each of our members.
