Short Summary

Jim May is the Artistic Director of Sokolow Theatre Dance Ensemble, a company dedicated to preserve and recreate works choreographed by the late Anna Sokolow; Mr. May is determined to save important works from extinction and pass them on to the ensemble's dedicated dancers. PRELUDES (1984), Anna Sokolow's dance to the music of George Gershwin, which hasn't been seen since 1986 is Mr. May's 16th reconstruction in the last 10 years. There is only one existing video of Juilliard's students dancing PRELUDES in 1986 located at the NY Library of the Performing Arts; Mr. May obtained permission to use this rare video to help with the reconstruction.

PRELUDES will be part of the Sokolow Ensemble's annual season in December of 2014 which will feature four American artists whose influence is felt world wide:  Edgar Allen Poe, Frida Kahlo, George Gershwin, and Anna Sokolow will highlight the company's unique ability to combine the arts: poetry, painting, music, theater, and dance.

What We Need

What you see on stage is the final product of many hours of rehearsals, schedule coordination, costumes designing, and much much more; and this is for one dance only! With your donation, you will be helping us tremendously covering these costs and you'll be forever part of our process.

  • Rehearsal Space with a piano: 4-6 hours a week for at least 2-3 months....
  • Costumes: designing/creating costumes from the 1930s for 8-10 dancers
  • Live music: pianist, scores, piano tuning....and more rehearsal!

The Impact

The costs of costumes, rehearsal space, salaries, technicians, theaters, etc. has grown while government grants has shrunk.

Your donation will support the following expenses:

  • $1200 Rent/Rehearsal Space
  • $1500 Costumes
  • $850 Pianist and Score
