Reina's Second Chance

La Reina de Canoa, affectionately known as Reina or Negra, is a black lab that my sister and brother-in-law rescued from the Ecuadorian coast. Reina was found abandoned, half-starved, and with a broken leg and hip. My sister and brother-in-law (Maria Eugenia and Adrian) brought Reina back to Quito, Ecuador, where they live, so she could have surgery. The veterinarian quoted them $500 for the surgery, and could not precisely quote how much rehabilitation would cost.

Maria Eugenia and Adrian are total animal lovers and have been trying to raise money for Reina's surgery for over a year now. They have been able to raise about $200, so I wanted to help organize the fundraising to see if we could raise enough to help Reina get back on all four feet. Maria Eugenia and Adrian have suffered some financial set backs due to the economy, but have been caring for Reina and two other rescue dogs with all the love they have. I'm hoping that if people can pitch in a small amount, we can all help them help Reina.

Reina Needs Surgery and Rehabilitation

Reina needs surgery on her leg and hip to help her walk normally again. Also, since it has been over a year since she was rescued, she will also need some rehabilitation for her leg. Reina's veterinarian quoted $500 for the surgery. She was not able to quote how much rehab would cost, but we imagine it could run as high as $200. Maria Eugenia and Adrian have been able to raise $200 already on their own. If we can help them raise an additional $500, Reina could have her surgery and rehab covered.

The Impact

Reina is the sweetest little dog who deserves to recover her full mobility. Unfortunately, Maria Eugenia and Adrian are not in a financial position currently to pay for her surgery, but they have opened their home and hearts to their new friend. All funds will go directly to Reina's surgery and rehabilitation. Anything that we are able to raise above the amount needed directly for Reina's medical costs will be donated to ENDA (Ecuador Natural Defensa de Animal) and GORA Adopción Ecuador, two local animal rescue organizations in Ecuador, to help other Reinas, who were not so lucky as to be adopted by Maria Eugenia and Adrian.

Other Ways You Can Help

We completely understand if you're not in a position to financially contribute to Reina's surgery fund. We hope that you will share Reina's story as widely as possible so she can hopefully get the help she needs! Even if you can contribute $5-10, with enough funders, she can get back on all fours in no time!
