Who we are
RightsInfo's mission is to increase knowledge of and support for human rights through engaging social media and video. We are a registered charity (no. 1167370).
What we are raising money for - #RightsSaveLives
![]()
The NHS is an amazing institution, providing world-class, free healthcare even in difficult times. But it needs help. Financial pressures, staff shortages, an ageing population, and the rise of complex diseases like diabetes, dementia and obesity are all pushing the NHS to its limits - the British Medical Association says it is at "breaking point”. It is when the system is under pressure that people's rights can get forgotten.
Human rights can save lives. A positive response to support doctors and patients is urgently needed - and many in the medical community believe a rights-based approach, based on universal legal standards, needs to be embedded throughout the NHS. This would give doctors a framework for raising concerns, puts individuals at the centre of care, and empowers patients to speak up when things go wrong. Human rights can transform services by improving decision-making and helping to change the culture of an organisation, even in times of austerity.

To celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS on 5th July 2018, we will harness the power of film and social media to show people how #RightsSaveLives. We will produce three short films telling the real-life stories of doctors, nurses and midwives putting human rights first - and how doing so made a life-changing difference to the patients they were treating.
Each story will be brought to life by an incredible animator: Katy Davis (Gobblynne), Tom Senior and Anna Eijsbouts.

We will launch the films with a social media campaign, drawing on our links with health charities, bloggers and influencers to make sure these animations are seen by millions of people. In particular, we will call for human rights training to be a mandatory part of health education, practitioner qualifications and continuing professional development. We will also send these films to Members of Parliament who have an interest in health or human rights issues.
As part of the campaign we will produce:
-
Three powerful animated stories of midwives, doctors, nurses and patients. The three 2-minute films will chart the journey from cradle to grave through our National Health Service;
-
‘Humans of New York’ style interviews and photo reportage with some of the patients and medics;
-
A series of feature articles with bespoke illustrations, highlighting key lessons of putting rights at the heat of healthcare, and the human rights history of the NHS;
-
A variety of social media posts covering all aspects of human rights in health, and linking to work being done by our partners on this campaign.
Our track record
Our multi awarding-winning team is expert at making brilliant human rights videos that are widely shared and viewed on social media:
This is what we need to make the campaign a success
£10,000 will allow us to make the central film, which will involve character animation to describe a day in the life of a hospital doctor putting human rights at the heart of their work.
£15,000 means we can also make a film about human rights in childbirth.
£20,000 means we can also make a film about end-of-life care - so that we can tell the complete story of human rights from cradle to grave in three beautiful animations!
We will provide the supporting feature articles, ‘Humans of New York’ photo interviews, and social media campaign free of charge, to get this important message heard.
Any donation will help - and the perks are great. We are offering producers' credits, invitations to an exclusive screening, RightsInfo mugs, bags, and even two personalised masterclasses: one with our founder, leading barrister Adam Wagner, on human rights; one with our CEO, Julia Kirby-Smith, on film-making and storytelling.
What if we raise even more?
Anything donated over and above the £20,000 will allow us to create longer animations, additional explainer videos and more feature articles highlighting the role of human rights in healthcare.
The Impact
This project will make a genuine difference. Greater awareness of how human rights improve healthcare will build a groundswell of support among the medical community, decision-makers and the public. We have lots of medical organisations backing this project, and we'll send the finished films to Members of Parliament and other policy-makers.
This project is urgently needed. Human rights protect everyone and are an important safety net for the most vulnerable. Research by the British Institute for Human Rights has shown the impact that a rights-based approach can have in the NHS, but public support for human rights is low in the UK. We want this campaign to change that.
Our videos have reached millions of people already and we have no doubt this will be a huge success and start the positive human rights conversations we need right now.
Other Ways You Can Help
We appreciate that not everyone will be able to contribute money. But please do subscribe to our lovely emails, or follow us on Twitter and Facebook so we can keep you updated about the films. And please share this campaign and ask others to support!
Could you give us another 25% for free?
If you are a UK tax-payer we might be able to reclaim the tax you have already paid on the money you are giving - which means it could be worth an extra 25%. IndieGoGo can't process this through their website so we will be in touch in the next few weeks to check whether you are eligible, and hopefully we will be able to increase your donation at no cost to you!
