Rite of passage
In Meru County, Kenya, adolescent males must go through a rite of passage to be considered as older than a child. This passage typically occurs at age 13 years, though none of the teenagers at Watoto wa Ahadi Rescue Center have gone through it yet. As these children have recently been rescued from a life of poverty and exclusion on the streets, they are finding their way into normal life - a process of acceptance which requires much of them. To be accepted as full members of their community, they must undergo their culture's rite of passage - a three week ordeal where they receive life lessons from church, traditional and political leaders in the community. The cost per adolescent is $90, and there are currently 21 adolescents waiting to undergo this sign of growing up. Your donation will help adolescents who have been excluded from their community to become a part of the whole, while learning what it means to be a man and earning the respect of themselves and their community.
