River of Dark Purple is a feature-length narrative film that follows Polish émigré Sam Raczynski as he battles illness, his demons, and eventually his friends in gritty New York.

This is a world where nobody's right because, in one way or another, everyone's wrong: crooked moneylenders, bookies, cops, bodyguards, a psychic, a restauranteur, and a dance instructor for over-80s.

Sam enlists the help of Wesley, a naive tenant, to avenge his daughter's murder. But as Sam hurtles toward his death, he drags Wesley -- and Wesley's innocence -- right along with him.

The movie is about more than that, though: it's about what makes us right or wrong in an ever-changing world -- and whether it even matters.

THE DREAM

We have everything we need to start work on pre-production -- a finished script, a teaser, a willing and able team, a great casting director, and the know-how to get the movie done.

We have a vision for the movie: like a ballet amidst a battle, River of Dark Purple will portray beauty where there is none, and destruction where there shouldn't be.

SCRIPT:

The script, written by Matthew Goldstein and inspired by a term paper on Don Quixote, has won an award in the annual Laing Screenplay Competition. Industry professionals have raved about its idiosyncratic characters, original settings, meaningful themes and exciting storyline.

VISUALS:

We've plotted out just how the movie will look, starting with the teaser, storyboards, and tons of pictures that capture the essence of the character and the city.

MUSIC:

We'll use the opera Tristan und Isolde by Wagner as a leitmotif for the entire film. Beyond the moral ambiguity that comes with Wagner, the opera is an epic saga of longing and love so powerful that its first chord is studied as a paragon of gale-force emotion.

Wagner, of course, is Sam Raczynski's favorite composer.

Where's the money going?

We know -- $175,000 sounds like a hell of a lot of money. And it is! But to do this right, we've got to spend money on the following costs
  • Locations (scouting, paying for spaces, fees, and permits)
  • Cast (paying our dedicated actors, some of whom may be faces you've seen before)
  • Crew (paying our experienced and talented sound, lighting, and other crew)
  • Travel and food
  • Cameras, lighting, and sound
  • Art department (set design, wardrobe)
  • Insurance
  • Post production (editing, color grading, sound mixing and score)
  • Marketing
  • Business and legal fees (we hate them too)

JOIN THE RIVER OF DARK PURPLE CREW!

We're a group of dedicated, idealistic, and hardworking filmmakers who have a passion not only for our art but for our audience. We're so excited for you to get on board!

You -- yes, you -- play the most important role here. Without you, there's no movie. And in addition to making this incredible film adventure come true, you'll help convince everyone else that there's really an audience that wants this to happen!

Risks and challenges

Our main challenge is creating a product that will both fulfill us artistically and entertain our audience. Our budget is tiny and we'll have to creatively work around many issues that big Hollywood productions never even face. However, many members of our team have worked on feature films much smaller -- and have found ways to make it work.
