Our Story
We love pie. To say that we are pie enthusiasts would be an understatement. In fact, we think that pie can change the world. AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!. The youth leaders of Pie Ranch need to get to Philadelphia on July 27th to attend the Rooted In Community National Network conference. These youth leaders are inspired to connect people to know the source of their food and to work together to bring greater health to the food system from seed to table.
Every year hundreds of young people gather in a different city to share this common vision at the Rooted in Community conference. RIC is a national grassroots network that empowers young people to take leadership in their own communities. It is a movement of youth and adults working together, committed to fostering healthy communities and food justice through urban and rural agriculture, community gardening, food security, and related environmental justice work.
Pie Ranch's connection to Rooted In Community helps support the critical work we do with our youth here in the bay area. RIC offers technical training in community organizing, hard skills in organic agriculture, the opportunity to network with youth across the country, and is a tremendous inspiration to the young people at Pie Ranch.
This year we are striving to bring a talented group of 4 to represent Pie Ranch's commitment to food justice, to enhance and inform our efforts, and to bring critical information and connections back to California.
The Impact
It is our belief that if our team can make it to Philadelphia, we can create a healthier bay area. After attending the RIC conference two years ago, one youth leader from Pacifica returned as a high school sophmore to start a 1/8 acre school garden, organize fellow classmates, and rally teacher and administartive support! At 15 yrs. old.! Being able to send this group of youth provides the training and support they need to commit to social & food justice projects here in California that create a healthier world for us all.
"Having Attended RIC two years ago, I have seen the power of RIC to inspire individuals and give insight in to the work that hundreds of other people are doing throughout the country. It is an amazing opportunity to share what we are doing with other people and to see and be inspired by the projects of others. The opportunity presented by RIC to collaborate with others and learn from their work is one that is unparalleled and one that has allowed me to employ the skills and ideas I acquired at RIC two years ago in my community back at home. I intend to return from RIC with new skills and renewed inspiration to continue my work at Pie Ranch and at Oceana High School." Naftali Moed, Oceana High School Student
