Logline: In this world obsessed with idealized beauty, Reese, a plus-size teenager, faces an internal battle to embrace self-love. However, when her lifelong friend throws her a curveball by creating an outrageous rule she must follow to attend her 18th birthday party, Reese finds herself on a path to confront her fear of societal judgment.

Hi everyone! My name is Shanaya Coloma and I am a senior at California State University, Long Beach majoring in Narrative Production with a concentration on Directing and Production. Rubenesque is a coming-of-age, teenage drama, set in the modern day. Where we see Reese who struggles to love herself as a plus-size teen girl dealing with the unrealistic beauty standards set by our society; while trying to navigate the troubles of having a toxic best friend. It dives into complex ideas such as: what is considered beautiful now versus in history, how plus-size women should act and present themselves to the public eye, body image issues, fatphobia, navigating toxic friendship culture, etc.

I wrote Rubenesque this previous summer and pitched the story to fellow classmates, professors, and faculty this semester. Which was then greenlit to go into production this semester as one of the ten CSULB senior films! Rubenesque holds a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to share it with you all!

What We Need & What You Get

Rubenesque is set to film on November 3rd, 4th, 5th! This gives us only a little over a month to reach our goal of $3,000! We are currently in the pre-production phase of our production and are still in the process of securing locations and actors. But before we move to the next step of funding!

By contributing to our film it will provide the support needed for the film's production and pre-production costs in regards to feeding our cast and crew, production design, wardrobe, film permits, location costs, and much more. Your help will ensure our cinematic vision comes to life and create a film that tells such an important message.

The Impact

This project is very personal to me as it reflects some of my own experiences growing up as a plus-size woman who has struggled to embrace self-love because of the unrealistic beauty standards that have been ingrained in our society time and time again. At times I felt like I could never love who I saw in the mirror because it seemed other people could automatically deem me wrong. After all, I don’t fit what society’s idea of beauty looked like. I wanted to make Rubenesque to tell a story about these ingrained ideas of beauty and criticize them because not only are they very damaging in the perception of oneself but also in the way of feeling the need to act in a certain way in front of others to please their idea of us. Especially in this story where in high school everything can feel intense and more than ever, all we ever want to do is just to fit in. I know for myself that I would have loved to have seen a story like this growing up and I know many others can benefit from it as well.

Other Ways You Can Help

If you are unable to contribute to our crowdfunding campaign but would still like to support this film, a share on social media or just spreading the word to your family and friends is highly appreciated!

Meet The Crew

Director: Shanaya Coloma is a Filipina filmmaker who is a senior at California State University, Long Beach majoring in Narrative Production with a concentration in Directing and Production and is originally from Palm Springs, CA. When Shanaya was a young child she loved to create stories with her toys and make comedic skit videos with her family members. Which had led into her passion for filmmaking and has grown into one of the ways she find happiness. Since then she has had a passion for all things storytelling and hopes to create films that inspire and impact people to question society. To be able to share her experiences and the lost voices of others through the power of film and to be able to create a conversation. Shanaya made her official directorial debut in Spring 2023, with her film illusion which was chosen to screen at the Full Spectrum 2023: Intermediate Films Showcase.

Director of Photography: Millie Belveal is a senior majoring in Narrative Production at California State University, Long Beach, with an emphasis in Cinematography. Millie is passionate about creating art that shines a light on the human condition and mental health. She hopes the work that she puts out into the world connects with folks and helps people feel less alone in their experiences. Photography was Millie’s first passion, spanning back to middle school, but it wasn’t until recently that she began DPing various short films both in film classes and professionally. She is grateful to be a part of such an important story that will no doubt touch many people’s hearts: Rubenesque.

Producer: Lawrence Marquez is a Filipino American filmmaker studying at California State University Long Beach. He is in his last year of film school, pursuing a double concentration in Production Management and Broadcast Production, accompanying a minor in Linguistics. Taking on a multitude of roles on student films, he has found a liking for cinematography and producing. He has furthered his craft in seeking community at 22 West Media as a volunteer and as the current Outreach Coordinator for the CSULB Women in Film Association. He has a passion for film and its ability to express emotions and tell stories that can feel familiar yet unique to one’s experiences, like the narrative and themes found in Rubenesque. He hopes to create inclusive spaces and make changes to the industry that gives everyone an opportunity and a voice.

Producer: Akhila Bordag (they/them) is a biracial (Indian and German!) third-year film student at CSULB. They started film in 2020, and have not looked back since! With a passion for the arts founded in theatre, they have indulged in any art or craft they could find! Currently in the Directing track, they plan to learn and share stories of unique and diverse voices- ones from different racial or ethnic backgrounds, ones from varying ability, and ones from any queer experience. With a special interest in art history, Rubenesque was an intimate, personal story that immediately struck Akhila in a place they had not felt in quite a while. This is a story they are ecstatic to be able to share with you all.

Producer: Christian George is a Honduran American who was born and raised in Los Angeles California. He’s a very passionate filmmaker who loves bringing stories to life with other passionate groups of people! He pursued Writing and Producing while also experiencing many other roles in production as he studied at CSULB. He was the President of the Producers Club while studying on the Screenwriting and Production Management track. He understands how powerful a film can be and how it can help an audience connect with a great story such as Rubenesque.

Production Designer: Ellie Creighton is a fourth-year Narrative Production major, in the Cinematography track, here at California State University, Long Beach. Ellie began to be interested in film in her Sophomore year of High School, where she'd eventually form a film group with her friends named Scuffle. Making videos each week for Scuffle  inspired her to pursue filmmaking and through community college, Ellie discovered one of her main film interests, production design. Ellie has continued to work on films in the art department, enjoying both the pre-production and production process, as it allows her to express her mind in a creative way. Rubenesque is no different for Ellie. She is excited to work on a film with an amazing depth in production design and its meaning for the story and its characters.

1st Assistant Director: Gianna Labinpuno is a fourth-year film major at California State University, Long Beach, with a focus on directing and screenwriting. With a passion for writing, she has completed 2 feature-length screenplays, numerous short scripts, and television pilot episodes during her time at CSULB. Additionally, she is a former STEM and business major, having early experience in CAD modeling and 3D printing starting in high school, which she has since utilized in student films as a Production Designer. Since making the switch to film, she undoubtedly feels at home with her creativity and has nurtured her passions and skills through the various courses offered in the school's film program. Gianna has also worked as the 1st AD and producer of Shanaya's directorial debut, illusion, which she describes as an enriching experience that she would like to replicate in Rubenesque---a film that echoes the sentiments of many young girls who have yet to realize their beauty.
