The Story

Meaning "younger brother" in Cantonese, the short film Sai Lo follows a 21 year old man: Kevin's journey in finding his true identity. Initially enamored by his brother's lucrative criminal lifestyle due to the financial success it appears to bring, Kevin's outlook on life is changed forever after he meets the grim fate of a girl working at a karaoke bar, forcing him to face the harsh reality of the dark depths of Chinatown's criminal underworld.

Meet the Director

My name is Corey Seng, and I am a senior at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, majoring in film & television. With eight years of filmmaking experience— growing up, I have always been obsessed with storytelling and expressing ideas from my perspective, with film and television being the perfect medium to precisely showcase my narratives. Having grown up in New York, I have encountered my fair share of unique experiences and interactions constantly commuting between Queens, Manhattan, and Long Island. Culture and identity have been extremely significant themes for me throughout my life. Being an Asian-American, I always found myself struggling with the concept of choosing what "side" to align myself with. Questioning whether I was either American or Chinese, this struggle of finding a cultural balance is something near and dear to my heart, serving as a focal point within this film derived from many of my own experiences.

After experiencing a surreal exchange between some of my friends at a karaoke lounge this past summer, I decided to showcase this slice of my own life, exhibiting an experience which may be a little more familiar than many people may realize.

The Impact 影响

Growing up Chinese-American, it was frustrating not seeing people like me on the silver screen. Although within the past few years many East, Southeast, and South Asian films and television shows have broken into mainstream media, Asian-American projects on the other hand have received very little support or interest. Comprising of a handful of movies and even fewer television shows, the lack of Asian-American representation is particularly upsetting, especially after the trials and tribulations many Asian-American individuals, families, and groups were put through during the Covid-19 pandemic. With issues such as the Model Minority myth and other unfortunate stereotypes being pushed via social media and on television, much needs to be done in order to show the reality of being both Asian, and American. Composed of an entirely Asian-American cast, and majority Asian-American crew, this short film is intended to provide both representation and awareness, showcasing themes and aspects of Asian-American culture which are so seldom discussed in mainstream media.

What We Need

Our fundraising goal is $3000!

Not only is a lot of time and commitment needed, expenses play a huge part in the process of creating short films, especially when it comes to taking care of our cast and crew. Other important factors that will incur significant expenses are location and transport fees, for the KTV spot, where a majority of the film takes place.

The support we receive will go into:

  1. Pre-production= $1000 (locations, equipment rentals, permits)
  2. Production= $1500 (production design, wardrobe, transportation/travel, crew meals)
  3. Post production= $500 (editing, marketing, festival submission fees)

Risks & Challenges

Our biggest risk is completing the film within our arranged schedule. SAI LO has been allotted a week to shoot based on equipment rig dates, where our goal is to shoot around our student cast and crew's academic and professional schedules. Our intended budget of $3000 will help us maximise the time we have with our cast, crew, location and equipment rentals in order to complete a film that we can be proud of.
