Salt Lake is a short film by award-winning Melbourne-based Production House, Primitive Films, in collaboration with Filmr Media and La Rosa Productions. Written and Directed by Luke Creely and starring Emma Louise Bournes and Nick Bracks, the film takes a bold and unique visual approach to represent the “experience” of complex mental illness and psychosis.

ABOUT PRIMITIVE FILMS

Established by Luke Creely and Jack Coco in 2014, Primitive Films specialises in horror cinema with a focus on confronting and taboo subject matter.

Primitive Films has produced three short horror films:

Playground (2015), which was awarded an Official Selection at Phoenix Film Festival Melbourne.

Juncture (2017), which was accepted into 13 film festivals worldwide and won 7 awards, including Best Director (Luke Creely) at 12 Months Film Festival.

They Can’t Hear You (2018), which had a sold-out premiere at Melbourne’s Monster Fest, was accepted into 11 festivals worldwide and won 5 awards.

ABOUT SALT LAKE

Written by Luke and inspired by real events, Salt Lake is about a young woman, Leah, who, in the wake of an unprecedented tragic event, experiences a psychotic episode as she comes to grips with her trauma.

The film will be produced by Henry Huynh, executive produced by Adam La Rosa, and shot by cinematographer Sam Butler.

Talented Melbourne-based actor, Emma Louise Bournes, has been cast in the challenging lead role of Leah.

Mental health advocate, public figure and actor, Nick Bracks, has been cast in the supporting role of Paul. Nick will also be our mental health ambassador for the project.

Our vision for Salt Lake is to give psychosis, and mental health more broadly, a strong and compelling cinematic voice. We have found that those who experience complex mental illness often can’t find a way to articulate that experience. They can feel isolated. Misunderstood. This doesn’t sit right with us. We want to do something about it by employing the power of cinema to help enforce change and to contribute to the vital ongoing public conversation about mental health awareness.

Salt Lake is a raw and confronting film that will be shot in some of Australia’s most beautiful and expansive exterior landscapes. It will use haunting and evocative imagery and soundscapes to visually and aurally convey what is often difficult to communicate through words. Our film will give the audience the “experience” of mental illness, will help explain what is often unexplainable, and will explore a misunderstood illness with the truth and honesty that it deserves.

Through Salt Lake, we want to provide those experiencing complex mental illness an outlet, a way to feel “understood” and to feel that their experiences are “heard”. We want to make a difference. We want to make an impact. And given that it is a universal medium and vehicle to explore taboo themes, cinema is the way that we want to do that.

WHAT WE NEED

We need to raise $20,000 (AUD) to put Salt Lake up on the big screen as it has been written and as it has been carefully envisaged by our creative team.

Every dollar raised will go towards:

- Camera and equipment hire

- Catering, transport and accommodation fees

- Location hire

- Wardrobe, Hair and Special Effects Make-Up

- Props

- Production Crew Fees

- Editing and Sound

- Additional production expenses

WHY YOU ARE IMPORTANT AND WHAT YOU GET

Filmmaking is a collaborative medium. Successful film productions are built on teamwork and collectives of people striving to achieve a shared goal. For us, our team extends beyond just our production crew and actors. We have big ambitions for Salt Lake. We want our film to make its way around the globe and have universal appeal and impact. We want it to reach the masses. We believe in our film and want you to believe in it too. We want you to join us on this exciting journey and help us create this important film.

You can do this by contributing to our campaign within the next 30 days.

By becoming one of our “pledgers” and contributors, you will be the lifeblood of this production. We value each of you and will offer you generous reward packages and perks based on the amount you pledge. We believe that everyone who pledges to Salt Lake should become a “part” of the film production process. We want to peel back the curtain and show you what we are doing and how we are making the film.

Any pledge, no matter how small, will be highly appreciated by the Primitive Films production team.

We understand that not everybody is in a position to pledge or donate money. If you are unable to pledge, but still want to help, you can share the campaign on social media. Tell your friends about this important and impactful film and why you feel it is a worthy cause and message to support.

Help us get the word out there.

Together, we can create change. Together, we can help break the stigma. Together, we can use cinema to make a difference in the world.
