We are a diverse group of filmmakers studying Contemporary Media Practice at the University of Westminster. We share a passion for using filmmaking to display diversity, and treat marginalised identities with complexity.
Non-binary identity is something virtually forgotten in mainstream cinema. Although marginalised gender identities and sexualities are becoming more prevalent, there is still a ways to go before full equality is achieved. We feel SAM is another step forward in fostering equal representation. We also found very few people even knew about non-binary identity, and we want to educate the mainstream about the nuance and variety with which people experience gender.
Told over the course of four tableaus, SAM is the story of a non-binary individual attempting to find means of authentic self expression in a world with such strict gender coding. Played by two actors, one female and one male, SAM explores ways in which we all perform gender. Casting two actors, who continually switch places throughout the film, will allow us to subvert previous expressions of gender in cinema, and counter (a cisgender) audience's expectations. As Sam experiences anxiety, they shift from the 'real world' to their head space, visualised as a theatre. Here, Sam is able to work through their anxiety and find solutions to performing their gender, rather than being forced to conform to society's limitations.
The story is ultimately about a person’s struggle to authentically represent their gender in a society that has not yet created the social signifiers to do so. It calls into question the way we all perform our gender, whether male, female, or non-binary.
To make SAM a reality, we need to raise £5000. Here's how we're planning to use the funds:
Locations: £1800
Catering: £250
Avid Keyboard Skin: £30
Van/Driver: £450
Costume/Props: £1000
Compensation of Actors: £470
Contingency/Misc. Costs: £1000
We are a student production with a professional work ethic. This means we hold ourselves to a high standard, but are limited in our funds. This is where we need your help! Your investment means allowing us as filmmakers to create the best film possible. The story we have to tell is not just relevant to LGBT audiences, but can also help broaden acceptance and understanding from a cisgender, hetero-normative audience. Your donation can be a part of fostering that diversity.
Casting two actors to play the main role has been a vital part of our project since its beginning. However, we realise the difficulty that lies in believably having two people portray one role. To combat this, we are closely workshopping with our actors prior to filming, allowing them to create a character between the two of them. We are privileged to work alongside a cast that is so focused on being truthful to non-binary identity.
Even if you cannot contribute personally, please share our campaign on social media or with friends and family! We appreciate any support!
