Summary
Children
living in informal settlements and slums tends to grow up fast, they become the
informal solution to their families struggling to deal with daily problems
involving infrastructure access and livelihoods. These children often has to
take up roles such as watch over younger siblings, sick household members, and
step into the role of productive contributors to help the household make ends
meet.
Most
of the time they become hawkers or petty traders at a very tender age, saddled
with these responsibilities, they often limit or forego their schooling,
cutting short their future educational potential and the economic and social
opportunities, as well as skills, that education affords. This vicious cycle of
poverty is one of the biggest issues in development, and necessitates
significant creativity to problem solving.
What we have been able to achieve
For
over two years that we have been in existence we have witnessed an influx of
children in our targeted group, we have successfully enrolled over 80 children in
our current school located at Ipaja Ayobo slums in Lagos state
We
have been able to provide uniforms, books, lunch and care for these ones making
them feel loved and not unfortunate to come from a poor home or drop outs.
Our Aim
Our
major targets groups are children
with disabilities, drop-out, orphans and vulnerable children from the slums of
Ipaja Ayobo, Lagos.
Challenges
The root of the problem
is large number of students in our school with poor infrastructure that has led
to congestion and our inability to further enroll more pupils and few teaching
staff, and a very poor infrastructure which leads to poor quality education.
This has partly been an unintended consequence of …. success in increasing
primary school enrollment. Also our school is ill equipped with learning
materials.
What
We Need
Rebuilding and
expanding our classes so as to enable us bring in more children from these
slums is one of our major priority also our team of volunteers with your
support will be able to provide additional support to over-stretched teaching
staff. This includes providing teaching assistance, distributing reading
materials, individually supporting the children in most need through
mentorship, and organizing extra-curricular activities such as sports, reading
clubs, life skills mentoring.
Long-term
Impact
With the continual
success of this project more local children will be able to finish school with
a high level of literacy and core skills to succeed in life. Helping them to
shape their perspective about the society so that they can view it has one
filled with possibilities and a society that calls for social responsibility
with an opportunity to positively impacts several lives.
