Why Environmental Education?
Science Camp provides children with an experience that nurtures an appreciation for the natural world in a camp "community" that also develops respect for self and others. The personal competencies developed during science camp carry over to the world back at school and in the home. These include self-identity, self-worth, compassion, contribution, commitment and character. Children who attend science camp typically are transformed by the experience, and parents report their children are more caring, understand the importance of giving, and are more equipped to stand up for what they know is right. These are qualities that will help build a successful nation and an even better world.
Who am I?
I am the superintendent of the Bellevue Union School District (www.busd.org).
Why am I Doing This?
Our district does not have a foundation to raise funds for extra-curricular activities and events such as Science Camp. Our schools have organized fundraising activities, yet not enough funds are raised to support all of our students. We have four schools, with approximately 275 students in 6th grade who would love to participate in Science Camp.
Where Will the Money Go?
All of the funds will be used to pay for Science Camp registration and transportation of students back and forth to Science Camp.
Each school costs $10,000 to fully fund all 6th graders. If the full amount requested of $40,000 is raised, then all four schools can attend.
What You Get
First and foremost, you will feel good about donating to a worthy cause. All donors will be listed on our web page. With donations of $100 or more, you will receive "thank you" notes from students who attended science camp. For donations of $1000 or more, donors will be invited to be the "principal for a day". For donations of $10,000 or more, donors will be invited to be "superintendent for a day".
The Impact
Your donation will help our students develop an appreciation of the outdoors and to take care of our earth. As described above, the impact of science camp is widespread and plays out in the lives of students way beyond 6th grade.
