My name is Jan Rehwinkel and I experiment with moving images since about 1990. Locating my work between drawing or painting and film, I use digital and analog technics. Though it is important to me to work with materials and unpredictability.

In "1536 Units" I deepend my work on processing film footage directly. While studying Visual Communication I made my first experience with drawing on Super-8 and 35mm footage - watch my film "Let´s proceed": http://janrehwinkel.de/Let-s-proceed

Since 3 years I am a member of LaborBerlin e.V. (http://www.laborberlin-film.org/) where I started to work intensively with analog film again. "1536 Units" is kind of the result of getting to know the machines we have at hand in our association (http://janrehwinkel.de/1536-units). I made copies with the contact printer of my painted filmstrips to paint on them again or to scratch into the film emulsion. Working this way I can switch between the media painting and film. For the structure for this film I created a soundtrack of samples which I edited on the computer. Doing montage with analog film footage after many years again was strongly influenced by my experience of non-linear video editing. So analog and digital methods were enriching each other.

Trying to realize my ideas with simple technics and low budget I come now to limits. To make a good and proper screening copy of my film brings up different difficulties: this film has a very uneven and rough surface that makes it difficult to run with analog copy machines. And the digital sound needs to be transferred into optical sound to be added to the picture on 16mm. This I want to let get done by a company which is specialized in that.

What Is Needed & What You Get

For the copying at the professional film laboratory I will have to pay nearly 1000 euro.

I indicated 1100 euro for the funding goal, because I decided to offer for backers high quality photo prints and postcards with stills of my film. The big photo prints (40x30 cm/ 15x11 inch) will be "Fine-Art-Inkjet" on very nice structured paper, the smaller photos (24x18 cm/ 9.5x7 inch) will be done with C-print, more specifically digital exposure.

If I reach more than 1100 euro I will commission one more screening copy  and/or  a 16mm screening copy of my film "Let´s proceed" which was originally painted on 35mm  and/or  will let some digital moving images of my next film-project be exposed on 16mm film.

Ich experimentiere seit 1990 mit "Bewegt-Bild" und ordne meine Arbeit zwischen Malerei oder Zeichnung und Film ein. Ich nutze digitale und analoge Methoden, um meine Filme umzusetzen, wobei es mir wichtig ist, möglichst viel mit Material, bzw. haptisch zu arbeiten.

Mit meinem Film "1536 Units" habe ich eine Technik vertieft, die ich schon in meinem Studium der Visuellen Kommunikation für mich entdeckt hatte: das Bemalen von Super-8 und 35mm und das Abkratzen der Filmemulsion. Seit 3 Jahren bin ich Mitglied im Filmverein LaborBerlin (http://www.laborberlin-film.org/), wo ich seit dem wieder intensiv mit analogem Film arbeite. "1536 Units" zeigt in etwa das Ergebnis meines Kennenlernens der Möglichkeiten, die wir in unserem Verein zur Verfügung haben. Zumindest technisch gesehen - inhaltlich geht es in dem Film im weitesten Sinne um Wahrnehmung. (http://janrehwinkel.de/1536-units). Ich habe unter anderem Filmkopien von meinen bemalten 16mm-Material gemacht, um dies dann wieder zu bearbeiten. Auf diese Wiese wechsle ich immer zwischen den Medien Film und Malerei. Als Struktur des Film habe ich am Computer einen Soundtrack aus Samples erstellt. Nach so langer Zeit wieder analog zu schneiden war deutlich beinflusst von meiner non-linearen Arbeit als Cutter.

In der Regel setze ich meine Projekte mit einfacher Technik und minimalem Budget um, womit ich jetzt gerade aber an meine Grenzen komme. Um eine gute und angemessene Vorführkopie meines Films zu machen, stoße ich jetzt auf folgendes Problem: der bemalte und zerkratze Film hat eine sehr unebene und grobe Oberfläche, was es schwierig bis unmöglich macht, ihn durch einen analogen Kopierer laufen zulassen. Außerdem soll der Ton als Lichttonspur auf den Film transferiert werden. Ich habe den Film schon einscannen, bzw. digital abtasten lassen und möchte jetzt eine fertige Vorführkopie von einer Firma, die darauf spezielisiert ist, ausbelichten lassen.
