screenshake 2015 (formerly called Free To Play Expo) is the third edition of Belgium's only international indie game festival and takes place February 6-8 at Het Bos, Antwerp.

This unique cultural event welcomes everyone with a broad cultural interest, an open heart and an open mind. It's not aimed solely at 'gamers' or developers, much like Sundance Film Festival isn't aimed solely at actors or directors. screenshake 2015 is an extraordinary opportunity for anyone to discover the artistic potential of the 21st century's most revolutionary and important medium: video games.

Three days and two nights will barely suffice to see, hear, do and play all of the things at screenshake 2015, with a series of talks by a dozen international speakers, several workshops, art and game exhibitions, two explosive musical parties, unique performances, a Belgian developers' showcase and much more.

The 2015 edition of the festival is once again organized by Antwerp indie game collective The House of Indie. With every new edition, we strive to improve the festival experience for our visitors and guests alike, but as a non-profit, our means are effectively limited.

Our biggest cost concern is transportation. We have an amazing line-up of confirmed speakers and artists who would like nothing more than to come hang out with you and all of the other screenshake 2015 visitors. We just need to get them to the festival.

That is why we turn to the community for help: would YOU like to attend an international indie game festival and meet both indie game icons as well as fellow indie game enthusiasts from around the world? You can personally make that vision a reality--and the only way to do so, is by supporting our campaign and buying your ticket now.

If we meet our funding goal, you'll be treated to this all-star line-up of speakers:

Friday night brings the live-coded musical extravaganza that is the legendary ALGORAVE. The next evening, party until dawn with the finest providers of hard beats and gentle bloops in the entire indie community at Saturday's screenshake PARTY.

Tunes cordially provided by:

We've done good so far, but we can still do better!

As soon as  we reach 7000$, we bring these performances to screenshake 2015:

We don't know but we're pretty sure there's never been anything like Tough Coded in Belgium. Do you want this? No, you need this:

It's the encore everyone's been asking for! After an amazing performance at the very first edition of our festival, we're happy to welcome back to Antwerp Joost Van Dongen (Awesomenauts, Swords & Soldiers) and his Cello of Virtual Doom. Stand your ground as Player battles Cello on the field of (cyber)war in this amazing interactive musical performance.

Cello Fortress is a unique combination of a game and a live music performance. A cellist defends a fortress by improvising on his cello. Melodies control the guns, dissonant notes activate the flamethrowers. Players from the audience use game controllers to steer their tanks and attack the fortress. The cellist plays live music, while at the same time controlling the game to be a fun challenge for the players. Cello Fortress is an innovative experiment that blends concert and game.

PLEASE NOTE: we're still putting together the festival schedule. For now we can only guarantee All Access ticket holders to be able to see both performances.

The moment we reach 8000$, every single backer gets GameLoaded!

If there's one documentary that captures everything that's wonderful about the indie game community, it's StudioBento's GameLoading: Rise of the Indies

GameLoading: Rise of the Indies is a feature documentary exploring the world of indie game developers – their craft, their games, their dreams, and how they have forever changed the landscape of games culture.

GameLoading features interviews with a mix of high-profile and up-and-coming indie developers and industry figures, including Rami Ismail (Vlambeer), Lucas Pope (Papers, Please), John Romero and Tom Hall (id Software founders), Zoe Quinn (Depression Quest, Steve Gaynor (Gone Home), Alexander Bruce (Antichamber), Mike Bithell (Thomas Was Alone) and dozens more.

Pippin Barr, one of our lovely speakers, is a New Zealander who lectures on and designs video games. He's a keen gamer but also has a scholarly understanding of how these games are changing our lives. One of his acclaimed game designs is a little different from the normal shoot-em-up ones - it's based on a work of performance art by Marina Abramovic.

If we manage to end on an 11K high note, we're giving every single ticket holder (so party tiers and above) a free download of Pippin's book 'HOW TO PLAY A VIDEO GAME':

It’s an introduction to games for those who may not be completely sure what the big deal is, but also an entertaining and empowering read for those of us who are already all about games.

You can listen to Pippin talk about the book here.

We're super grateful that you're helping us build a vibrant indie game community in Belgium and we'll gladly shower you in a bunch of Really Cool Shit to express our gratitude. Here are the myriad ways you will personally benefit from going above and beyond to help make screenshake 2015 a reality:

* Prices are listed and paid in $ because only this way we can allow credit card payment on IndieGogo. We converted them to Euros at the December 8th conversion rate through Google Finance, then rounded them for easy comparison.
** There is a limited capacity for talks and shows at the venue, but everything not sold out when the campaign ends will be available for sale on our website with a late-bird surplus.
*** There are 4 different posters with increasing amounts of awesome, more information below.
PLEASE NOTE: All perks must be claimed at Het Bos during the festival.

For all of our merchandise, we've worked closely together with the almost offensively-talented Dominik Johann (Super Game Jam, Laza Knitez) to create the screenshake 2015 visual identity. From our logo to our posters and from our stickers to our t-shirt, we want to provide you with as much of Dom's amazing designs as we possibly can. Because really--just look at them!

These stickers are perfect for decorating your laptop, table, fridge, suitcase , small pet or loved one. Stick'em up!
(PLEASE NOTE: not yet final design; image indicative)
(PLEASE NOTE: all perks can only be collected at the festival!)

A loving hommage to the 2001 Monolith, the screenshake 2015 standard festival poster may or may not also  bring hidden insights, accelerate human evolution and open stargates allowing for faster-than-light-travel. It also looks amazing on your wall.

"But wait, there's more!"

We're all crazy about limited-edition poster variants and it doesn't get a whole lot crazier than these gorgeous, limited edition variants, in rising order of scarcity. The alternative versions without text really allow the artwork to shine. *The super-limited gold print (only 13 copies!) will be hand-numbered and signed by as many screenshake 2015 speakers and artists as we can manage to fit on there.

Wear your heart on your sleeve and your screenshake 2015 on your chest.
(PLEASE NOTE: not yet final design; image indicative)

Each consecutive Monday until the end of the campaign, we'll reveal another reward from the Mystery Tier. We can't say much about them except that they vary wildly and while all of them are positively priceless, you can get them for a donation of €300.

And yes, you can buy them in advance if you really want to be surprised.

MYSTERY REWARD #1: WILLIAM PUGH'S TEA TIME

William Pugh, gentleman creator of the IGF and BAFTA-nominated The Stanley Parable has the honor and privilege of accompanying you for High Tea, our treat. You may engage in stimulating banter or scandalous gossip over scones.

Plus, as per young master Pugh's own words:
"You will accompany William Pugh for an entire day - you will never part (apart from when it would be really weird). The antics and shenanigans you two will get up to will be to remember. Oh boy. He will film the entire day and then edit together the footage into a short film. - BACKER MUST BE COOL AND UP FOR FUN STUFF - NO LAME-Os"

MYSTERY REWARD #2: LUCY MORRIS' SKILLS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Developer of (often) butt-focused games at Group Pug. Professional whipper of indie tweeps. Originator of the wonderful Asylum Jam. Strongwoman behind many a fine game collective. Lucy Morris wears many hats and she wears them all with flair. On top of that, she's an amazing artist to boot. We understand your jealousy, but if you buy this reward tier, you get to vicariously be an amazing artist yourself, as Lucy creates whatever your drawing-skill-deficient brain can come up with!

But don't just take our word for it, here's Lucy herself:
"Personal, commissioned art. It's up there with all the good-osity of the smell of a freshly baked loaf of bread. The feeling of sinking into a warm, toe-curling bubble bath. The relief of letting out a long pent-up fart. For this tier, I'll draw whatever you whimsy (unless your whimsy is way too gross, in which case I can veto it - but anything up to a knight with an ass-hammer is a-okay). It could be your face, it could be a scene from your game or your game's protagonist - it could even be your cat in a dress. New thinking... new possibilities. ... wait, no, that's Hyundai. P.S. You can redeem your prize as facepainting at the event instead. P.P.S. I've never facepainted anyone before."

MYSTERY REWARD #3: SOS SOSOWSKI'S STREET SERENADE

"This Christmas, give the gift of song!" You may know indie game renegade Sos Sosowski as the creator of McPixel, the first game ever to be Greenlit on Steam (AND be officially endorsed by The Pirate Bay),  Nightrider Turbo (you think you can drive a car but you are wrong), Flappy Bird (no, not the original, the Commodore 64 port), Doom Piano (it's a piano that plays Doom) or from a thousand other projects, performances or installations. He's also a gifted and charismatic musician.

Luckily, Sos is willing to use his powers for good instead of evil, if you claim the third mystery reward. Sos will write a song about anything you like (even yourself!), perform it at length on a busy street corner and send you all of the money he makes from his street performance of the song you ordered! GET RICH QUICK! CALL NOW! LINES ARE OPEN! Take it away, Sos:
"I shall compose as well as perform a highly poetic rap song about any given topic provided by the backer. I will then utilize my remarkable marketing skills and perform the rap song on the streets busking for pennies. All proceeds from this effort will be shipped back to the backer. The entire feat shall be recorded and uploaded for everyone to admire forever."

MYSTERY REWARD #4: CATHEDRAL OF TALES with AURIEA HARVEY

No other company marries the deeply personal expression of Art with the contemporary immediacy of the video game medium like Tale of Tales. Sprung forth from the almost alchymic collaboration (and love) of Michael Samyn and Auriea Harvey, Tale of Tales have been challenging and enriching the world of independent games for over a decade, with no end in sight.

If you've ever thought: how interesting it must be to discuss art and architecture with the creators of Bientôt l'Été, Luxuria Superbia, The Forest and The Path (among others)", have we got an offer for you (and one companion of your choosing):

"Be inspired by an in-real-life visit to Ghent's Saint Bavo Cathedral in the hometown of Tale of Tales. Learn the importance of this sacred architecture with its stories hidden in plain sight and see the world famous altarpiece by the brothers Van Eyck. This personal tour, given by Auriea Harvey, is filled with interesting anecdotes that will further your understanding and appreciation of videogame design. We can also discuss how it changed your life over a glass of white wine afterwards."

MYSTERY REWARD #5: A WILD RAMI APPEARS

As one half of Dutch indie game studio Vlambeer, Rami Ismail regularly makes his mark on the indie game scene. He doesn't stop there though: Indie Mega Booth marketing mastermind, presskit() & distribute() originator, international speaker and supporter of countless community initiatives all across the world.

All this activity can make Rami a hard man to get a hold of--except for whoever claims our fifth mystery reward. No matter where you are in the world, if you buy this tier, Rami will get on a plane and personally come visit you for a whole day. Don't believe us? Here's the man himself:

"I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that I fly too much, and for this reward I'll fly to you! I'll personally pay for the flight & my stay in your fine city to come hang out with you for a full day. You'll be free to ask for any advice or whatever while I'm there, and we'll even go for dinner*.

*dinner costs not included."

If you've ever seen us at any event, your eye will have been caught the gorgeous, hand-crafted arcades and peripherals from the hand of our fourth collective member Thomas. Among other things, he has made the Belgian Winnitron arcade, a custom controller stand for I-Illusion's Elemnt4l game, a custom Luftrausers arcade and more.

You can see him at work in this short clip about our crafting activities with The House of Indie (English subtitles available in CC):

Every single time we're at a convention, people come up to us and ask if Thomas' designs are for sale. Every single time the answer is no. But exclusively for the  screenshake 2015, we are now offering three, limited-edition, hand-made wooden joysticks to our highest backers.

We can't think of a more beautiful and fitting way to say 'Thank you!' to our top tier backers than to give the gift of game, and so each of the three $615/€500 backers will get a one-of-a-kind, exclusive, hand-crafted wooden design joystick to class up their home or office.

(PLEASE NOTE: not yet final design, image is indicative)

Het Bos, which literally translates to 'The Forest' were formerly known as Scheld'Apen, and used to be located at the Petrol site. They describe themselves as "a culture house in the middle of the city". They aim to be a welcoming space for thinkers, builders, artists and others. Het Bos has a mind set on sharing, a heart for our planet and an eye for diversity.

They offer us the comfort of organizing our event in a venue that has a bar (with its own coffee brewery), a restaurant,  several galleries, a theater/movie hall, a concert venue, recreational space, an urban garden and all kinds of little nooks and crannies to explore. It's a wonderful fit for The House of Indie and a welcoming venue for our screenshake 2015 guests and visitors.

We are The House of Indie, a local indie game collective, established early 2013 by four like-minded individuals, with the explicit goal of establishing a living, breathing indie community in Belgium, much like those we'd come across abroad in places like Utrecht, Copenhagen, London or Berlin.

In order to do that, we decided to take the bottom-up approach and create at once awareness of indie games within the general audience as well as try to bring existing developers and enthusiasts closer together.

We started small, taking self-made arcades to events, but nowadays we have branched into organizing workshops and exhibitions, monthly meetups and of course Belgium's only international indie game festival, screenshake.

We are Hannes Devillé, Thomas Devillé, Bram Michielsen and Jonatan Van Hove and up until today, there's not one photo that shows all four of us together.

With screenshake 2015 we hope to show people that games have the potential to say and do so much more than they are often still only give credit for. We aim to change the public perception of what a video game can (aspire to) be. We feel the best way to do that is to spread knowledge and engage in open, thoughtful dialogue from the comfort of a welcoming, diverse and safe space like our festival.

We also want to give back to the local community of artists, designers and developers who are day in, day out giving their all to follow their dreams, simply out of love for the medium. When we see what comparable communities are able to accomplish abroad, we hope that our festival can be both a means to bring together like-minded people locally as well as an opportunity to connect with the indie game community globally.

WHAT IF YOU DON'T RAISE THE MONEY YOU NEED?

The obvious question. Thanks to IndieGoGo's Flexible Funding model, we're able to keep whatever money we collect, so in case we don't make it, we'll just invite as many guests as we can possibly get with as much money as we did manage to collect. Don't worry, the festival is taking place regardless, but would you just look at that line-up? Wouldn't it be an absolute shame if we couldn't make that happen?

WHY ARE THE PRICES LISTED IN DOLLARS? ARE YOU TRYING TO SCAM ME?

We're certainly not trying to scam you. The reason the prices are listed in dollars is because it's the only way for us to offer payment option by credit card. It's how IndieGoGo works. The prices in dollars are therefore what you're actually paying us.

YOUR EURO CALCULATIONS ARE WRONG! ARE YOU TRYING TO SCAM ME?

We would never. The reason the prices listed in euros aren't exact conversions of the dollar prices down to the last cent, is because they are indicative. They're rounded slightly up or down by a few euros at most, to make price comparisons more easy. You're welcome!

I WANT TO BUY A DAY PASS FOR  THE TALKS ON SATURDAY/SUNDAY

We are currently not offering day passes. We're convinced you won't want to miss out on any of our amazing speakers. If not all of the All Access passes sell out, we may consider selling Day Passes at a higher price after the campaign ends.

WHEN WILL YOU SEND THE STICKERS/POSTER/ETC. TO ME?

Please be advised that we WON'T SHIP ANY PERKS. Anything you order will be waiting for you to be collected AT THE LOCATION OF THE FESTIVAL. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

WHEN WILL THE SPEAKER/ARTIST LINE-UP BE CONFIRMED?

Depending on how fast we reach our goal and how far we (might or might not) exceed it, we’ll be able to lock down the speakers and artists roster. We’ll definitely keep everyone posted.

HOW WILL YOU KNOW MY TSHIRT SIZE IF I ORDER THE TSHIRT REWARD

Every backer who orders the tshirt reward, will be contacted to ask about their preferred size, so we can have it ready and waiting for you on the day of the festival.

I HAVE A QUESTION THAT'S NOT LISTED IN THIS FAQ

Please ask us anything you like, we'd be glad to answer.
