Overview
Over 30 years since its thrilling American premiere in Concord, Massachusetts, "Ebenezer Scrooge: A Christmas Carol", New Life Fine Arts’ moving musical adaptation of the 1843 Charles Dickens story, will now be made available on CD and digital format in the premiere cast recording! We hope you'll consider partnering with us on this historic project and help bring the true meaning of Christmas to more people.

What’s This Project All About?

This powerfully orchestrated musical retelling of the radical, Christmas‐Eve transformation of ageing Ebenezer Scrooge—the “Bah‐humbug”‐ing miser who hates Christmas—has become a New England tradition, gripping audiences since 1987. The show’s musical score features a gifted cast and musicians that lifts audiences back to a long‐ago, wintry Victorian London for Scrooge’s unforgettable encounter with the Christmas Spirit.

MacAdam wrote this musical adaptation of Scrooge in 1984 while he was living in England, where it also was first staged. We invite you to partner with us to help make this project a reality, so that more people will discover the true joy of Christmas through the delightful sounds on this brand new recording of Scrooge. A show where thousands of theatergoers have been given an inspirational glimpse into the true meaning of Christmas, it musically reminds us, as Dickens would put it, “Christmas can be every day of the year.”

The retelling of Scrooge’s unhappy past and present preoccupations, with predictions of his woeful future, is interwoven with original songs by Concord composer and playwright David MacAdam along with well‐known Christmas carols, including “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” written by Boston’s own Phillips Brooks. The cast, with marvelous songs, leads theatergoers to the moment of the startling change that overtakes Scrooge—and by the show’s climax even the audience might be tempted to join in singing, “We hear the Christmas Angels the great glad tidings tell, O come with us, Abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel!”

What is New Life Fine Arts All About?

"Theater you can believe in"

New Life Fine Arts Musical Theater is a non-profit theater group composed of a wide variety of team-players from the greater Boston area. We subscribe to the “classic” or “biblical” world-view that as human beings we are made in the image of God and are therefore accountable to Someone higher than ourselves. The same God who made us, loves us and seeks to salvage us from our lostness and restore us to Himself.

Our commitment is to consistently provide high-quality entertainment and works of art that reflect the truth of the gospel; promote and encourage God-glorifying artistic endeavors through education, exhibitions, and community networking so creative gifts can be developed and exercised for the benefit of others; partner with Christian individuals and groups to reach out to their communities through the performing and visual arts; and present impactful stories that in some way reflect the timeless truth of Who God is and what He has done in the person of His Son.

NLFA is the arts ministry arm of New Life Community Church, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Concord, MA. Your donation above the cost of merchandise received through this campaign is tax-deductible.

Who is David MacAdam?

David MacAdam is the founding pastor of New Life Community Church in Concord, Massachusetts. He and his wife, Mary Ellen, have been active in church planting, evangelism and discipleship on both sides of the Atlantic for 38 years. David has ministered the gospel in more than 20 countries and has pastored churches in England and the United States. After ten years in Europe, he served as Minister of Missions, Discipleship and Evangelism at Grace Chapel in Lexington, Massachusetts. In 1986 he planted New Life Community Church  with a vision to build contagious Christ-centered communities in the greater Boston area through small LIFE groups and ministry teams.

In addition to a teaching ministry, David is a writer, playwright, composer and producing director. In 1987 he founded New Life Drama Company (now New Life Fine Arts) which serves as a means of introducing unchurched audiences to the life-transforming message of the gospel by bringing redemptive Christ-centered musical dramas to the stage. David and Mary Ellen have three grown children, Jonathan, Heather and Ben, and ten grandchildren.

How Will the Money Be Used?

The money raised here will go directly toward producing (recording, mixing and mastering) the 20+ selections to be included on the cast recording, as well as covering costs for CD duplication, packaging design, fulfilling “rewards” from this campaign, and minor administrative costs (IndieGogo and credit card processing fees ). Any money raised above and beyond the project budget will go toward supporting future New Life Fine Arts performances.

How Soon Are Funds Needed?

Our goal is to reach full funding for this project in 40 days so we can have CDs ready to distribute just before the next upcoming performances of Ebenezer Scrooge: A Christmas Carol in December. Instrumental arrangements will be prepared in the studio during the month of August so the lead vocalists and ensemble can be recorded in September. Mixing and mastering is scheduled for October and duplication will immediately follow. This schedule aligns with our rehearsal schedule for the December performances, so we'll be able to rehearse the cast for both recorded and live productions at the same time.

Why is This Project Important?

We have had many audience members over the years ask us to make a cast recording of this show, and we want to provide a way for those who have enjoyed the show in the past to enjoy their experience even longer. It also enables audience members to share the message of Christ with others through this recording. We believe strongly in making an investment in this generation through the high impact medium of theater arts, and your partnership with us on this unique mission would help make this possible!

Our vision is to one day provide a full season of high quality dramatic events on a resident stage in our proposed New Life Ministry Center; home of New Life Community Church and New Life Fine Arts. From this base we propose to send traveling performance and teaching teams who will take the message where the people are. We solicit no funds from government arts councils and are funded entirely by local supporters like you. By God’s grace, this album will help us to raise future funds to support our vision and one day see it become reality.

Risks and challenges

Scheduling multiple recording sessions both in studio and "on location" with over 30 musicians can be challenging, especially when everyone has a day job! So as much as we hope and trust that everything will go according to plan, there inevitably are hurdles to overcome that could slow down the project.

That being said, our producer, Peter Vantine, has over 30 years experience in music production, and the successful completion of dozens of full-length albums gives us the confidence to meet the goals of the project. We would be glad to answer any questions or concerns you have, and we'll be diligent in updating you on the progress as the project evolves.

Thank You from David and NLFA!

David and the cast of Scrooge would like to thank you for taking the time to look this material over and learn more about New Life Fine Arts. We hope you will prayerfully consider supporting this project and partnering with us in shining the spotlight on Christ through music and theater. Your generosity and encouragement fuels our passion to see this project fully realized. We couldn’t do it without you! Thank you!

p.s. We understand that not everyone is able to support this project financially. We would greatly appreciate you sharing this campaign with your social networks and above all praying for the Lord's will to be done through this project and through New Life Fine Arts. God bless you!
