Short Summary

Section 16 is about a teenage girl who gets victimized by the human trafficking industry. The book chronicles the thoughts, experiences, and emotions that go through her mind as her life gets upended by a series of unexpected turns.

My name is Sneha Nadella and I am the author of Section 16. I wrote this book because human trafficking is becoming increasingly prevalent and it’s important to realize how close to home it can hit for many of us.

My hope is that, in reading this book, you will discover the web-based nature of human trafficking and how its targeting tactics work. I want you to see this book as an opportunity to stop being just a passive listener, and instead take action and stimulate societal change.

Estelle is a 16-year-old girl leading a complicated home life in a tiny suburb at the west edge of New York State. As a fairly introverted girl who strays away from socializing, Estelle finds herself sticking next to her sister and sole confidante, Hazel. Running away from home and leaving Hazel is a huge deal for Estelle - that decision continues to follow her throughout the rest of her journey - but she feels that it is the right thing to do. Upon arriving at her family friend’s home, she has a great feeling as she immediately begins school and makes friends, but just as she's getting comfortable, she finds herself a victim of human trafficking. She's forced to push out of her comfort zone and build confidence that, unknowingly, resided in Hazel ever since her childhood. Facing that inner turmoil along with the trauma she experiences at the trafficking site are simultaneously Estelle's largest obstacles and strongest growth opportunities.

You will love this book if you strive to see social change and would like to gain an insider’s view to one of the many ways trafficking occurs.

Section 16 speaks to those who have reached the stage where they need to become more aware of some of society’s harsh realities, and to those who want to view courage and decision-making in a new light.

Ultimately, I hope that Section 16 inspires reflection and fruitful dialogue, pressing into engaging questions like:

  • How can I make sure I am aware and safe, as well as others? How can I help more people understand when they are at risk of being trafficked?
  • How has human trafficking become the billion-dollar industry that it is?
  • What can I do to help end human trafficking?

As well as personal questions such as:

  • How do I know if I am trusting the right people or person?
  • What’s the worst possible thing that could happen the next time I take a chance on something? Will it really be that bad, or will it force me to pick myself up with thicker skin next time?

I look forward to exploring these questions and beyond with my readers. I believe discussing the steps we can take towards making a change and why this change is so important will benefit not only current and potential victims, but society as a whole.

What We Need & What You Get

This book will be published with New Degree Press. I set up the pre-order tiers to help cover the costs for publishing my book. Money raised will go towards the following:

  • The editor I will work with to revise and publish my manuscript in August 2021.
  • The cover design of my book. (The mockups you see currently are a placeholder!)
  • The layout design for the interior of my book (physical copy, ebook formats).
  • The copy editing for my book to polish the grammar and spelling prior to publication.
  • The launch & promotion efforts for my book when I ultimately publish this Fall.
When I pre-sell 120 paperback copies of my book, I will publish a paperback and ebook. When I pre-sell 150 copies of my book, I will also publish a hardcover edition. When I pre-sell 200 copies of my book, I will publish a hardcover and an audiobook.

I am also offering some exclusive rewards for people who pre-order my book now:

You will receive a personally signed copy of my book when I publish.

  • Your name will appear in the Acknowledgments section of my book.
  • You will receive early access to the Author’s Note and other excerpts from my book, with the opportunity to review it and give me early feedback.
  • You will have the opportunity to be involved in selecting my cover and title.
  • You will be invited to join my Author Community and get behind-the-scenes sneak peeks into the publishing process.
  • And much more!

About The Author

Sneha Nadella is a high school student who has been a human trafficking activist for the past three years. She founded an anti-trafficking club at her school, and is the co-host of the Let’s Talk Trafficking podcast where she speaks with survivors of human trafficking.

Sneha wrote this book after reflecting upon the stories she heard from talking to survivors. She was captivated by the widespread nature of trafficking. It was mostly just how easily anyone can fall prey to the system that drove Sneha to write Section 16, and represent just one of the many ways trafficking can happen.

Apart from her advocating interests, Sneha is an Indian classical Kuchipudi dancer, a competitive swimmer of 11 years, and an avid movie lover. She would rather be outdoors 90% of the time, and loves spending time with her friends and family. She wouldn’t turn down a good hike, movie night, or road trip.

Risks & Challenges

The biggest challenge with publishing a book is delivering the finished book to the backer, specifically my mailing of the book to you. I have eliminated this risk by including the cost of mailing and shipping the signed copies into each pre-order tier.

The risk of delivering the pre-sale copies of my book is contingent on the publisher we use. I will be working closely with New Degree Press to make sure we ship the pre-order rewards to you as early as possible. We will keep all pre-sale backers up-to-date as to when my book will publish. You will know when the copies of my book you pre-ordered are expected to ship.

Other Ways You Can Help

Some people just can't contribute, but that doesn't mean they can't help:

  • Please share my pre-sale campaign on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn with your friends, family and network. Please use #Section16 and tag me as well as my publisher, New Degree Press, so we can help amplify your efforts.
  • You can easily share my Pre-Sale Campaign Page via Indiegogo at the top of the page.
  • Please share my book with 5 friends, family members, or co-workers who you think would enjoy it via text or direct message on social media.

Thank you so much for all of your love and support!

Thanks again,
Sneha Nadella
