Up to 75% of the children in Guatemala suffer from malnutrition.

Seeds for a Future (Semillas Para el Futuro) is an established non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is helping the Guatemalan town of Chocolá and ten adjacent communities combat malnutrition by providing the knowledge and skills necessary to cultivate family gardens, raise small animals and prepare high-nutrition meals at home. Education and self-help are critical components in the integrated program Seeds for a Future provides to help rural Guatemalans help themselves.

Women in the Seeds for a Future Family Gardens program in Chocolá, Guatemala worked with Seeds for a Future staff to create a fantastic 138 page cookbook! 500 families are in the program and need these Cooking for Nutrition cookbooks to fight malnutrition. No such cookbooks are available today.

The cultural pride and love of cooking of these motivated women shows clearly in the traditional recipes, handed down over generations, as well as their personal innovations and specialties. The effort reflects their growing understanding of the need for better diets and balanced meals for their families, and all of the contributed recipes emphasize use of the high-nutrition plants on which the Seeds garden program is focused.

Now we need to raise the funds to have the cookbooks printed and delivered to the families in our program!

The Impact

If we reach our goal, we'll be able to print and deliver at least 1000 cookbooks to our Seeds for a Future current and incoming families. Any excess monies raised will directly fund our community and family gardens program.

If you've been following the news, over 57,000 children, many of them from Guatemala, have crossed the border into the U.S. this year alone. The root cause of this issue is violence in urban areas, lack of education and poverty in rural areas, and Guatemala has the highest rate of chronic child malnutrition in Central America. We must encourage a grassroots approach to help create a more sustainable future for the children of Guatemala (and throughout the world).

This cookbook will assist the families in preparing healthy, nutritious meals and give them pride in the cookbook creation, empowering them to be proactive with their daily meals and future.

What You Get

We have a wide assortment of Guatemala goodies, including 7 days accommodations in Guatemala and a personal tour of the family gardens in Chocolá with Seeds for a Future founders Earl and Suzanne de Berge.
