Short Summary

For nearly five years, the "ridiculously talented" (DC Metro Arts) Hank Curry has been traveling to theater festivals across the nation to perform "a celebration of classic pantomime" (All About Solo). Now it's time to take the act to the biggest fringe festivals of them all: Edinburgh in Scotland and the Camden Fringe in London!

What We Need & What You Get

After performing original clown work at United Solo off-Broadway in New York and at fringe festivals in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Rochester, I knew it was time to tackle the big one: Edinburgh Fringe in Scotland! And as long as I'm in the United Kingdom, why not perform at the Camden Fringe in London, which runs at the same time? This is an opportunity not only to perform for a new audience on another continent, but to participate in two of the biggest theater festivals in the world. There is the potential to be seen by other influential artists, make important connections, and most importantly, put on a funny show!

Going to an overseas festival is an expensive undertaking, and I can't do it alone. Even our final goal is still the bare minimum necessary for this endeavor. With a ten year background in DIY theatre-making I know how to make a show on the cheap, but reaching the final goal would mean avoiding having to cut corners and would grant festival-goers the optimum theatrical experience. Every dollar you donate will go directly to:

- Registration fees

- Airfare and travel expenses

-Housing

-Rehearsal Space

-Advertising

-Props and technical necessities

And what do you get? Well, if you live in the U.K., you get to see an incredible show! But if you don't live over there, have no fear. There's a whole host of exciting perks to be had in exchange for donating, including original artwork, a producer credit, and even a comedy masterclass taught by the artist!

The Impact

Performing in these festivals represents an opportunity many orders of magnitude greater than ever before to be seen, reviewed, and make connections. Performing in Europe also means both reaching an entirely new audience and discovering new artists that may prove influential or even become future collaborators.

And what impact might this show have on the audience? The beauty of comedy in general and clown work in particular is its ability to render personal dilemmas universal and to reach audiences of all types regardless of age, language, or background.  When I first performed "Confusion" eight years ago I was interrupted mid-performance by an audience member, approximately age six, who loudly declared that I was "the funniest person in the world!".  Afterwards, she and her little brother came backstage and stuck to me like glue as they explored our props and tried to uncover how we had made seven scenes out of one actor and a box of props.  Over and over again in moments like these I have seen how performance has the power to reach out and touch us in ways we could never have anticipated, and it is my hope that this show can do the same in the United Kingdom.

Risks & Challenges

Mounting a production is never an easy task, but I have no doubt that it's one I can manage. Since 2014, I have self-produced nine plays, almost all of them original works.  On my first self-produced project, my director and stage manager walked out mid-process, leaving me to not only write, act, and produce, but also to direct my own one-man show. This trial by fire taught me how to create something out of nothing. Since that time, I have worked as producer, performer, director, designer, and promoter on all of my shows. Traveling to the Edinburgh and Camden Fringe Festivals represents my biggest challenge and most ambitious undertaking yet, but with your help, it will not only be possible, but inevitable!

Other Ways You Can Help

We're willing to accept any donation, no matter how small, but if even $1 is too much for you to spare, you can still help.  Share our page as much as you can and encourage your friends to do the same.  Getting the word out about our fundraising efforts is half the battle, and we know we can count on you!
