We will ALWAYS know how many years it's been since Line Between premiered at ODC in San Francisco. Because, as it happened, our son Niko was born a week before the show opened. (He came a little early. Our theory is that he wanted to see for himself what all the ruckus was he'd been hearing in utero for eight months). Four years have passed since that very special double feature.

The short schpiel:

Now, the door to Asia has been opened and we've been invited to re-mount Line Between.

The Seoul International Dance Festival (SIDance) has offered inkBoat the opportunity to perform this October and we humbly ask for your help to make it happen.

The opportunities from this are magnified by the fact that the festival overlaps with the Performing Arts Market Seoul (PAMS), which takes place October 5-9. Presenters and venues from around Asia will be attending PAMS, and our performance, which will take place October 6th, was scheduled intentionally in order to maximize our exposure and exchange with these international presenters.

We have the chance to leverage future performances and tours throughout Asia, which would be a dream come true.  To make it happen, we need your help to get there!

The longer story:

The offer to perform at SIDance came late and on the condition that we get ourselves there. The festival is offering us a modest fee ($1,500) and hotel accommodations for 6 nights. We have also secured an emergency grant from American Dance Abroad for $2,000. We have a solid start to raising what we need to get ourselves and our set to Seoul, but we have $5,000 to go and we're turning to you now for help.

There are six of us traveling- 3 dancers, 2 musicians, 1 set designer/ lighting technician. If we raise this $5,000 we will have enough to cover our airfare, set transport, with a little bit left over to pay our hardworking team, who are otherwise working for peanuts, or rather, kimchee.

Your contribution would be not only helping us get to this gig in Korea, it would be helping pave the road for future inkBoat performances in Asia. It would be a gift toward a very specific purpose as well as an investment in our future.

The even longer story:

One of the many reasons we are excited about this opportunity to perform Line Between at SIDance is that we seldom have the chance to revisit any of our past works. Typically, artists are funded to make new work rather than to develop old material. We are thrilled to get the chance to return to past material and develop it further. A human being goes through a lot of changes in four years, as Niko so boldly illustrates. How have we grown as artists, and how will this production of Line Between reflect our growth?

Back in 2011, Line Between was made through the collaborative efforts of Shinichi Iova-Koga, Dohee Lee and Peiling Kao as performers, Suki O'Kane and Jason Ditzian as musicians, and Dana Iova-Koga as director.  The design team (which won an "Izzie" award for outstanding stage design) included Amy Rathbone (set and instillations), Frank Lee (set), Allen Willner (lighting and stage), and Alice Wu (costumes).

We are faced with some challenges in this endeavor. The first has to do with embracing change. The irreplaceable Dohee Lee and Jason Ditzian are unable to join us for this performance. However, we are thrilled to have on board with us Jubilith Moore (performer) and Katherine McDonald (musician), two wonderful artists who bring their unique talents to the work. Peiling's role will be played by Dana (who wanted to do it back in 2011, but couldn't due to being extremely pregnant.)

The second big challenge has to do with funding. Which is, of course, why we are doing this darn crowdfunding thing. As we have discovered, there are very few grants out there that will fund international touring performances. And even if there were, this invitation came too late to give us ample fundraising time.

We were fully aware of these challenges when we said yes. But it is a yes we feel very excited about proclaiming.

Will you join us in this affirmative?

Even if you can't or don't want to contribute to this campaign, will you say "YES!" out loud on our behalf? (With the echoes of that YES touching all of the creative risks that you and we and all of us take.) And/or, will you do the digital version of that and spread the word on your digital platform of choice?

Thank you very much.
