About the project

Susanna Majuri is a fine art photographer from Helsinki, Finland. For the past fourteen years she has been working with water. She uses water as if it were paint. It merges people and landscapes together, blurs the dimensions and adds a metaphorical depth to her photography. In her images Majuri composes multiple psychological and symbolically charged scenarios to mirror her innermost feelings.

Sense of Water is Susanna Majuri’s first book.

The book takes the spectator on a visual and emotional journey inside these deeply personal scenes, which are loaded with things one cannot talk. The untold stories, the fear of losing someone you love, profound loneliness. The images are paired with writings from four Nordic writers Vigdís Grímsdóttir, Monica Fagerholm, Tua Forsström and, for the first time, Susanna Majuri herself. She hands the reader a map into this other, secret world and unveils the enormous narrative potential that hides outside of the frames.

Falling, 2011.

About the book

The book has evolved through a number of iterations with major input from the designer. The final design and content has shaped into this beautiful 157 paged hardcover coffee table photobook. In October 2015 the latest book dummy was presented in the Aarhus Photobook Week in Copenhagen and the book got very positive feedback. Kehrer Verlag, a book publisher company specialized in books in the fields of photography, fine arts, and culture has promised to print and publish this book in September 2016.

Behind the scenes

Susanna and her book designer met a year ago and that's when things started happening.

"The first time I saw Susanna’s images back in 2006 I knew she has it. Can I say it? The sense of water. I immediately got sucked into her fantasy, and the images haunted me many years. I sensed the presence of melancholy, the untold stories, the secrets. They became part of my dreams. When I met Susanna for the first time, I knew I had to help her to get her story told, so as many people as possible could see it. Working with this book can best be described as a journey into Susanna’s exquisite way of seeing this world. I did my best that the book has the same kind of layers as Susanna’s work: conflicting, coexisting. This book is not just a beautiful book of a photographer, but a story of an artist. A story that is waiting to be found, revealed."
Elina Patjas, Book designer

Majuri is known for her magical, deeply touching scenarios, which is echoed in the shapes and elements of this whimsical and mysterious dress.

Dresses have always played a major role in Susanna Majuri's art. "Sometimes the garment itself can raise an idea of the character. The clothes make the character to blend in the background, dress in light, disappear and appear at the same time" says Majuri.

"The collaboration felt extremely natural to me: Ivana Helsinki is a brand that touches me deeply. We speak the same language, it's a union of two beautiful souls"
 Susanna Majuri tells.

Travelling back in time. This special image encapsulates Iceland, my sister and I. When I go back there I always go to the first time.
The Sense of Water starts with my relationship with breathing, not-breathing and water. Then the images take us to Iceland. When I think about Iceland, that place occurs. Could one ask more?
Where would you return if you could return to A Place?
I´ll take you into my place, like that. I share it with you.
My sister will come and as tender she is, she takes care, smooths down. We merge. Who would you meet if you could meet one of your dearest in past? If the water will rise can you open the door?"
Susanna Majuri

This is what Majuri tells about this special image:

I´m a sister of my sister. Blue in my veins.
Light gathers. Dress reveals.
Body in transparency.
Wind does not blow me away.
I enjoy telling the truth about the past. I turn the story inside out.
Look, I give you my presence, because this is my first book.
When I was creating Blue in the sun, I thought: She is dressed in light.

About the Artist:

Fine art photographer Susanna Majuri (b. 1978) is known for magical images, where water is often a key element. Another recurrent theme in her works is the north both as a landscape and as a state of mind. Among other qualifications, Majuri graduated in 2007 with a Master of Arts from the University of Art and Design Helsinki, majoring in photography. She is currently completing her doctoral studies on photographic fiction at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. Majuri’s works have been included in numerous international group exhibitions and she has had solo exhibitions at the Finnish Museum of Photography, Finland (2010), Museum of Photography, Charleroi, Belgium (2011) and Sogn and Fjordane Museum of Fine Arts, Norway (2011) and Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen, France (2014) among others. Majuri is also a member of the internationally active Helsinki School artist group and her work is included in several major public and private collections both in Finland and abroad. Besides frozen rivers, waterfalls and windy landscapes, she’s inspired by songs about water and especially loves Riverside by Agnes Obel.
