Short Summary

ABOUT

Shades of Color is a book that reflects the diversity of the world we live in capturing the beauty, spirit, complexions, and complexities of men. A book of empowerment, exposure, entertainment a response to what we don’t see in our everyday lives… images  of Asian, Black, Latino, and White men.

Man was created by God and photographed by Steven Williams

Your support will help me raise money to fund a 216-page photography book that I began creating five years ago. In a world that has debated race, culture, religion, and gender through my camera lens I hope to give you a glimpse of God's beauty in Shades of Color. I celebrate the subtle complexions and complexities of men.

During my travels across the United States, Europe, Africa, South America and Asia, I always study popular images on magazine covers, billboard advertisements, fashion layouts and the like. I look for images that resemble myself and communities of color … I rarely find them. This book is, in part, a response to what I have not seen. I want this book to be a reflection of the world we all inhabit. With the election of America's first African American President, Barack Obama, I hope everyone will look more carefully so as to move beyond racism, sexism and homophobia. I pray that the children of today will experience a world where power and beauty are not exclusively perceived as Caucasian, African, Asian or Latin, but rather as a glorious celebration of all of God's Shades of Color. After all, love is colorblind, so too is respect, admiration, kindness and beauty.

Steven Williams:

I am a Los Angeles-based professional photographer/ publicist that has traveled the far corners of the world in a devoted career that extends itself to the worlds of entertainment, art, charitable foundations, religion, philanthropy, as well as covering social and economic issues in Africa and America. My portfolio holds some of the world’s most celebrated luminaries from Destiny’s Child, Michael Jackson, Usher, Janet Jackson, Regina King, Jessica Alba, Rihanna, Marcus Patrick, Steve Harvey to Rodney Jerkins. I began as a child taking polaroid’s of family and friends. I soon found myself shooting weddings, headshots, and editorial. One day I met a young actress name Regina King at an event to promote peace between the notorious Crips and Bloods. She would ask me to shoot her wedding, at a time of my life were I was searching for a career. Regina King’s guest list included the who’s who of Hollywood. I would later be taken by Jon-John Robinson a music producer to meet BabyFace and his wife Tracey Edmonds. I soon began shooting their artist, Jon-B, Usher, Az-yet. Then one day Jamie Foster Brown the CEO of Sister 2 Sister magazine was at one of Clive Davis Grammy parties and asked me take a photo of supermodel Tyson Bedford tattoo. She would later post the image and offer me work and asked George Pitts photo Editor of Vibe magazine to give me an opportunity. Over the years I have shot for Ebony, Jet, People, Source, BRE, Q-magazine, Rollingout, and Vibe. God has taken me from an abused kid who loved taking pictures to having my work seen internationally. I still feel a desire to show our planet a more diverse image.

I worked as a publicist for Roz Stevenson Public Relations our vendors were Universal Pictures, Paramount, Sony and Weinstein Corp. Some of the films were American Gangster, Last Holiday, Inside Man, The break-up, Pursuit of Happyness. I worked as director of historical archivist for the Ray Charles Foundation until 2015.

Ten years ago I felt the need to give back to my community and help save the children. I started the Steven Williams Foundation to help disadvantage youth and created panels entitled: “peace through education.” With the help of celebrities and professionals like Edward J. Olmos, Regina King, Tichina Arnold, Ray Santiago, Scrunchoos, Museum Director Charmaine Jefferson and Carlos Barbosa. We have inspired our kids to continue their education and reduce racial tension.

Your generous contribution will pay for a portion of design costs, high quality scans, independent publishing, Typesetting, proof reading, graphics, video, travel, video editing, printing, cover designs, packaging and everything that goes into creating and publishing a full color glossy 216-page photography book. The book is slated for release in April of 2016. I have launched this campaign to raise money to defray the costs of a book. I am excited to be using an American printing company that has been around since 1897. This project will help bring healing, empowerment, entertainment, and opportunities of employment to those men who have been ignored or slated not good enough. There are many perks involved and gifts that will be given from our heart. Much much appreciation to each one of you who took the time to contribute, share and sacrifice to make Shades of Color come to fruition. God bless you all!
