Overview
You can help make a TV show! After three years in development, the 8-episode series "She Sees Beyond", inspired in equal parts by The X-Files, The Twilight Zone, and 80's horror films, is ready to begin production. We are looking to raise enough funds to realize our creative vision while simultaneously compensating the dozens of cast and crew members who will be providing their time and expertise to take the series to completion. Join us, and see beyond for yourself!

Synopsis

Between 1982-85, there was a rash of killings in the small Pacific Northwest town of Pemburrough. In total nine children lost their lives to whom the media would dub The Groom Lake Killer. As suddenly as they began, they ended. Now, over thirty years later, the killings have started up again. This time, it's not children, but drifters who have shown up dead. But the kids aren't alright -- they're being kidnapped, and when they're found again they're different. Something odd is happening in Pemburrough.

Pemburrough is known for something else: it is the home of reclusive horror author Samuel Clarke. His daughter, Lianne Clarke, is in her final year of high school. Until yesterday, her biggest concern was what college to apply for and where to go with her boyfriend on Friday night. She will come to long for yesterday.

Upon awakening from a car crash, Lianne realizes that she has gained abilities that wouldn't be out of place in one of her dad's books. Things move around her of their own volition. She can hear people's thoughts. And she can see things, things that other people can't. Who are these mysterious men in black? Who is the grinning man who is looking into people's windows -- into children's windows? And why does her father no longer look like her father?

Detective Dale Crenshaw is called in from the neighbouring city of Augustine, to head up the homicide investigation. He realizes that things aren't what they seem to be in Pemburrough. Spiraling into paranoia, he becomes obsessed with finding out the truth of the town's past.

What does Crenshaw find? He discovers that the past never stays in the past and that terror does not die.

What does Lianne see? She sees things she cannot explain. She sees horrors beyond our world.

She sees beyond.

You can see it, too -- if you've got the guts.

Our Campaign

We all remember our first time. For writer/director J.S. Oliver, it was the face-melting scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The world was never quite the same after that: a broader vista of feeling had been opened up for him. He knew soon after that he wanted to make films that affected people in the same way. His teenage years introduced him to Carpenter, Craven, and Cronenberg (maybe he should change his name to Coliver?), and a deep appreciation for horror was cemented deep in his psyche.

There's something magical about being scared out of your wits while sitting on your couch. Part of you knows you're safe, so you can experience it fully. And you're transported away, by stories, just like our ancestors were in the theatre, and their ancestors were around the fire. We can figure out a lot about ourselves when we face what we're scared of. Oliver wants to create such an experience for his viewers with SSB. Besides being very scary, the characters are compelling and fleshed out, and the narrative arc is complete and satisfying.

If you've ever experienced nostalgia for the feelings of childhood, especially of the feelings that movies let you experience, then you're a kindred spirit with the She Sees Beyond team!

With your help, we will provide a quality 8-part series that hearkens back to the sensation of hiding beneath a blanket, hearing nothing but synth music and screams. It will be frightening, moving, and fun, but it's more than a mere homage to the past -- it's a fresh breath of life into the genre, moving it into the present day and extending the concepts found in those prior works.

A still from the detective storyline. Detective Crenshaw questions a retired firefighter about what happened in Pemburrough in the '80's, trying to find a link to what's happening today. Obsessing over the past, even to the point of ignoring the present, is one of the themes of SSB, reflected in the storyline and the overall style of the series.

The scripts are written, the budget is in place, the principle cast is hired, and the schedule is ready. All that we need is the funding in order to begin production. We're always looking for new members of our team, so please, come and help make She Sees Beyond a reality!

With your contribution, you will be helping dozens of people realize their dream of making a fantastic series, and you will help them be compensated for their efforts. This allows the team to take on the time-consuming commitment of film production with all of their energy, because they won't have to worry about how their rent or groceries will be paid for. It's our goal to compensate everyone who is involved while simultaneously creating a top-notch production.

Besides being a great web series, note that the ultimate goal is to see She Sees Beyond on a video streaming service! You'll get eight episodes for the price of one. And remember that all prices are in CAD -- that means that if you're from the USA, your dollar will go even further!

The Nitty Gritty

All funding will cover the production of the series. Post-production is a whole different animal -- and happens to be our bread and butter. We will keep you updated on the entire process.

A brief note on the Flexible Goal. While we would love to meet, or even exceed, our funding goal, we are committed to delivering the series based on any budget. In fact, we drafted several iterations of the budget, which will allow us to create an optimal product no matter our funds, with minimal tweaks to the script (keeping in mind that some things would get moved around). So rest assured that your contribution will never be in vain.

The funds raised will be dispersed in the following way:

  • Equipment -- Much of the expensive equipment is already in our possession and fully paid for. This includes cameras, some lighting equipment, dollies, and some lenses. However, there is still some equipment that we will need for the shoot. This includes some lighting paraphernalia, some stands, digital storage for the raw video files, quality sound equipment, and one more lens. We will be renting to keep costs down, unless renting for the allotted film dates is more expensive than simply buying.
  • Food -- There's no way around it, people have to eat! Healthy meals for the cast and crew on the set.
  • Compensation -- It's our goal that everybody who helps out be compensated for their time. This includes all actors and all crew members. Independent filmmaking is tricky because it requires a certain level of commitment to deliver a quality product, but it is difficult for people to commit their time, even to a good project, when they have other commitments. I certainly understand this -- I wrote SSB between classes at university, after shifts driving a truck, and in the early morning before my job as an editor! One of the most helpful aspects of your contribution will go towards ameliorating this issue.
  • Production costs -- This includes everything that isn't covered under equipment: makeup and wardrobe, transportation, insurance, special effects, vehicles, and location costs. Much of this will be free from people in our network, but much will also require money. We have kept it to the lowest possible costs, and have budgeted accordingly! Most of all, it will get that sweet sweet monster makeup looking top-notch. The kid in me is squealing with delight just thinking about it, and we think the kid in you will, too, when you see it!
  • Additional fees -- This includes the production of the Perks, and the service fee for using Indiegogo. This will amount for roughly 6% of the funds raised.

Perks

The perks for this campaign were designed by considering what people might actually want. Personally, I think the coolest perk is having your name as one of the murder victims! If you're a fan of horror films this is a unique opportunity to "get involved". All of the perks will be of high quality and will be delivered in a timely fashion. If they're a physical thing, they will be shipped at the end of this campaign. If they're related to the production, then they will be available as filming unfolds. Stay tuned -- we promise lots of updates and full transparency on the process.

Impact

I know you've just read a lot, so I'll keep this section short. This project personally means a lot to all of us involved. If you choose to support it, know that besides great perks and a great series, you will also be fulfilling life long goals for many of us, wherein we will be able to create a high quality film. Thank-you, sincerely, from our hearts.

Filmmaking is time-consuming and often challenging. With the collective experience of the cast and crew, which ranges from on-set experience to academic degrees in motion picture production and theory, we have the know-how of how to run a set and deliver the product.

This is our first time making a series, and it has proved taxing in the writing process. It's very difficult to write an 8-part mystery series with a satisfying twist and conclusion! But with patience and diligence, a script was delivered that was up to snuff for the cast and crew -- and they're not afraid to tell you how they really feel!

As mentioned above, the budget and schedule have been locked in. We've crunched the numbers and this is do-able. We value transparency as much as you do, so check back here often. We vow to keep you in the loop with any hurdles we face, and how we're going to overcome them.

Welcome to the team.
