What is 'Show Some Heart'?
'Show Some Heart' is the debut sports documentary from NZ filmmaker Logan Swinkels.
Hockey players are known for playing the game with more heart and determination than is physically conceivable of the human body at times. But that commitment doesn't stop on the ice.
Wayne's Road Hockey Warriors is an annual charity event that helps underprivileged youth get into hockey whom otherwise couldn't afford it. This off-season charitable work by Wayne Simmonds and his crew of fellow NHL stars is important for the next-generation who dream of playing in the NHL and representing their country.
This documentary will be following all the events of the day, with the players telling their stories about what it means to give back to their communities.
We want people to know that hockey isn’t all about tough guys and fighting, there is a lot of heart within the game waiting to be exposed. Our documentary will ignore the stereotypes and show the art of giving back.
What We Need & What You Get
The goal for this campaign is $10,000 CAD. This target has been calculated as the minimum amount required for paying the film crew and gear rentals, along with realizing Logan's vision of producing this exciting documentary.
To help encourage donations towards our cause, there are some exciting perks on offer. From autographed mystery pucks, to Wayne Simmonds or Drew Doughty autographed jerseys, and the opportunity to be credited as an Associate Producer or Official Sponsor - there's something available for a wide range of budgets. Please check out the perks to see which option suits you best.
There's also an exclusive spot for one very generous hockey fan to play in the celebrity ball hockey game, alongside the NHL stars that will be attending the event.
This isn't about making a profit, but rather to spread a message. If this campaign succeeds beyond our needs, the production will donate surplus from the film's budget after completion directly back to the charity (Wayne's Road Hockey Warriors).
Budget Estimate:
Film crew = $2000
Creative fees = $3500 (post-production gear and time costs)
Gear rentals = $2000
Film distribution = $1000 (Physical copy delivery, Vimeo On Demand)
Misc. production costs = $500 (car rental, petrol, food etc.)
Indiegogo & PayPal Fees = $700-1000
If we don't reach our target, then a shorter form documentary will be produced instead. Either way, the charity is getting an awesome video to use for promotional purposes on-top of the documentary production. That's right - I'm resourceful, I'm making two out of one. One is my documentary, the other is a highlight reel for WRHW.
The Impact We Can Make Together
By making this documentary, we want to highlight the great work Wayne's Road Hockey Warriors does as a charity, which in turn will help them grow with the exposure this will generate to make future events have a greater impact on communities.
It is our hope that hockey
fans will share in our passion and interest in this story, therefore helping
make this documentary possible by donating towards our Indiegogo campaign.
“Hockey has always been a
passion of mine. Whilst it’s considered a minor sport back in New Zealand, I do
what I can to help make it grow through positive exposure in the news media.
After learning about what Wayne’s Road Hockey Warriors does for kids
that struggle to get into the game, it inspired me to team up with Your Legacy
and Wayne’s Road Hockey Warriors to create my first documentary film.” – Logan Swinkels.
“Hockey is much more than
just a sport, it’s a way of life. The opportunity to bond with teammates and
all those involved in the game extends far beyond the rink into the depths of
our lives. The
world needs to see the impact of hockey in our daily lives and how Pro Hockey
Players are doing everything they can to ensure all kids get an equal
opportunity to be involved in the game we all love” – Brandon Sinclair.
Who Are We?
Logan Swinkels moved to Toronto in 2013 to experience the Canadian way of life for a year whilst following his love of hockey. Since 2009, he has been producing video content for musicians but is now breaking into documentaries.
Prior to his move, Logan worked as a News Editor for 3News in New Zealand – an award-winning national
news network – where his passion for sport was nurtured and enabled him to work
with some of the greatest broadcasters that his country has produced. Logan
used this time to learn about sports journalism and how to tell stories in a
captivating manner.
Brandon Sinclair grew up playing hockey with Wayne Simmonds and others whom are now in the NHL. He teamed up with Wayne to found the charity Wayne's Road Hockey Warriors to help make a difference for struggling families trying to get their kids into hockey.
