Short Summary

Simply Baked is all about bringing flavors inspired by old-fashioned recipes from my kitchen to your mouth!

A made-to order bakery business that will based out of Fargo, ND (and happy to ship products anywhere within the U.S. I might add), Simply Baked is the culmination of years of trial and error in the kitchen, and years of experience in customer service and food industry. What really sets Simply Baked apart from other local shops, apart from my sparkling personality and wit, is that I don't just do cute cupcakes and crunchy cookies. I do candy, and I do it well, so I'm told!

The funds from this campaign will help in covering everything from getting me into a certified kitchen to helping pay for the start up supplies and ingredients needed to get Simply Baked going!

What We Need & What You Get

I set my starting goal at $7,500, which covers my basic start up needs.

  • legal fees associated with registering my business and getting the proper licenses and permits to be able to sell my products to the general public. Which should take about $250, which is not all that bad.
  • making purchases of wholesale/bulk ingredients, as well as proper containers for food safety! This stuff is important!

Beyond those essential needs, Simply Baked has a few other requirements to get off the ground. This includes, but certainly isn't limited to:

  • Packaging for the product, and the cost to print the required labeling for every product so that we're legitimate and legal and all our muffins are covered.
  • A professionally designed and built website, as well as hosting for a year! Along with the invaluable marketing/advertising genius that comes with this!
  • Printing costs for some shiny menus, coupons, signage, and necessary advertising materials to help Simply Baked build a name for itself in the community, and online!
  • Kitchen Space (rental per hour), being that I won't have a store of my own, and my own home isn't a space conducive to grand scale baking. There's a very lovely kitchen that rents our their equipment and storage space for reasonable prices.. and I've included a good chunk of kitchen time in my budget.. just enough to help get underway, and get Simply Baked started off right!
  • Booth rental fees for the farmer's markets this Spring/Summer/Fall. My intention is to set up shop at every Farmer's market in the Fargo area that I can reasonably get to this season, where I'll be selling pretty much everything but cupcakes.

I mentioned before some of the basic business needs such as my Ingredients, tools, some equipment, containers. This also has to include some technology (My goal is to purchase a small tablet for Simply Baked.. to keep orders, use as a Point of Sale System, and to store my recipes- which will hopefully cut back on my environmental impact!), as well as decorating equipment like piping bags, baking cups, garnishes, piping tips. Little things to fill in the gaps for the equipment I already own.

Some of these funds will also go to help to fulfill the perks, which includes a block of time at the kitchen (as a trial-run!), the ingredients required to bake, and shipping costs of perks and rewards! Your help is appreciated, and I plan to make sure you all taste just how much.

Lastly... This is a big job, and I can't do it alone. Some of the funds will be used to help bribe my nearest and dearest friends into giving up some time (and very likely some sleep) to help me out with this project. I've got a few people who have already committed to giving up some of their time, and I want to at least be able to pay them a little bit.. or provide them a meal... or something. Their time is valuable too!

Your help is invaluable to me. I appreciate any and all help you can offer, even if it is just a share on facebook or a retweet or telling your friends and family about me and what I'm trying to create. As an incentive and a way of saying thank you for your donation, my perks are set up with some tasty treat packages that I hope you will check out and enjoy later!

There will be also coupons, samples (which can be shipped anywhere in the continental US all priority style!) and for those big-spenders I'll even attempt to craft a menu item based on your particular tastes.. and I'll even name it after you if you want!

The Perks boxes come in 3 different sizes, and soon I will update this section with information about what each one will probably contain (I will most likely bake a variety of things and just do assorted boxes, so if you have a nut allergy or something please be sure that I am aware of this beforehand!)

The Ideas

I've spent countless hours perfecting my recipes over the course of my life, getting the flavors just the way that I want them. Simply Baked will offer a variety of products including cupcakes, candies, cookies, bars, and some other odds and ends! I hope to be able to include some vegan, gluten-free, and paleo options on my menu as well, but those recipes are still in testing phases!

These are just some of my favorites, but you can check out the website for the full menu listings that I have currently planned!

"Peppermint Mocha Cupcakes"

Mocha cupcakes with a chocolate truffle filling, and peppermint schnapps buttercream with crushed peppermint for texture.. Utterly delicious and holiday themed!

Truffles

Of all Kinds and varieties, actually. I really love to make these.. and apart from classic choices of chocolate I want to add a cookie dough, peanut butter, and orange truffle to my menu (all separate, not together).... and I have a few ideas for some fun, nerdy types as well.. but more on that later :D

"Peanut Butter and Honey Cookies"

The recipe I use for these cookies was actually an experiment. In an effort to cut back on the amount of white sugar we're eating all the time, we compromised and added honey to the recipe.. and man oh man. The end result was just too good not to include on the final menu. These have become a favorite with a smooth, soft texture and packed with flavor.

"Caramel Apple Spice Cupcakes"

One of my friend's mothers growing up made the most bombastic apple cake. I always wanted her recipe, and when I finally got it and tried it.. it failed. Utterly, and miserably. It was my first attempt at a 'from scratch' cake. Well.. I'm proud to say I have a recipe now that I think would rival hers. My apple spice cake is made with fresh apples right in the batter, a little hint of spice, and topped with a rich caramel buttercream which is crafted from a homemade caramel sauce, and drizzled with a little more.

    Risks & Challenges

As a new face to the business scene, I'm expecting a lot of struggles and a lot of challenges, but I've never taken the easy road and I don't intend to start doing so now. This is my dream. Whether its now or ten years down the road I intend on seeing this through, and making it happen one way or another.

These are the first steps on the road to my goal of owning a bakery where I can keep doing what I love most: Theorycrafting recipes, testing my insane flavor combinations, and finding new products to excite your tastebuds with. I'm a baby on the professional baking scene, and even though I've been learning and pursuing the art of baking since I was but a wee thing I still have a lot to learn. There are some techniques which I still have to Master.. but the good news is I am not scared to take them on. Most of what I've learned is self-taught, and I'm a pretty good student.

As a start-up business I'm trying to keep my risk pretty low, which is why I'm not engaging with the idea of owning my own storefront right now. I want to keep things simple, all around, with a sort of 'back to basics' mentality.. but that isn't to say I haven't spent countless hours mapping out my plan.. in fact..

(This is a work in progress map of my plans... if one is going to walk into Mordor and demand coo.. wait.. we're not doing that? Oh..)

I'm  also crowdsourcing quite a lot of help in this endeavor, and not just for funding. I've already recruited friends and co-workers for business advice, for help getting this project (just a baby at the campaign level!) on the ground, and getting some extra hands in the kitchen to do the real dirty work when the time comes. Not to mention all those poor souls, including my dear boyfriend (who is more than a little concerned about his figure), who have to try samples of my crazy recipe combinations (but usually with pretty happy results, I'm pleased to say!).

Having the use of a certified kitchen is crucial, and as I don't own a home to remodel, I'm going to be renting a professional kitchen space by the hour, baking only as needed when the orders come in. Which means I'm depending on the availability of time to book and orders coming in.

    Other Ways You Can Help

Some people just can't contribute, but that doesn't mean you can't help. Just giving a shout out will do a lot, spreading the word. The more recognition I get, the more likely I am to achieve the goal of getting started! Anything you can do to help me, big or small.. I'll say thank you the same way.
