Single Family Home
This is a different kind of ghost story.
Nicholas and Li unpack their new house in order for the arrival of their long awaited adoptive child. They move in a few days before the close of escrow because they only have the weekend to get ready. As they unpack they hear strange sounds and feel they are being watched. It’s not spirits haunting Nicholas and Li. It’s Ruth, the previous owner, who claims she cannot leave because of her “condition”. They soon find that Ruth never intended to move out and no amount of bribery or threats will convince her to go. With time running out, Nicholas and Li are forced to choose between the child they’ve always wanted and their humanity. Pushed to the edge, they contemplate the unthinkable.

The Lovechild of Horror
Indirectly we met as finalists in the Women in Horror Film Festival. With a mutual admiration for each other’s work, we decided pretty quickly that we would collaborate on a project. Over many coffee meetings and out of many ideas pitched back and forth, the story that eventually became Single Family Home was born. It’s the lovechild of two horror filmmakers.
- Tara C Hall and Bel Deliá
Making an Impact
Single Family Home is an independent production lead by five women in the top creative roles: Director, Writer, Producers and Director of Photography. Why is this important? Higher numbers of women both in front of and behind the camera means the creation of more stories, more opportunities and it paves the way to champion so many more voices.
Get behind the next wave of female filmmakers. Recent studies from the Sundance Institute have uncovered a huge disparity between female and male led productions. Studio heads have long believed that men are the dominant demographic when it comes to box office grosses, but according to MPAA findings, women make up 52% of ticket sales. While the gender gap is closing, there is still an under served market and an opportunity to reach that market. When given the tools, women will blaze a trail of real innovation in the industry.
Be a part of the conversation. Single Family Home is a dramatic psychological thriller with a social conscience. The story centers around, Ruth, a character clearly suffering from serious mental illness. The film departs from other genre films in that Ruth is the protagonist, illuminating both problems of mental illness and homelessness. We don’t presume to have one sweeping answer to these large and vastly complex social problems, but we do want to open an honest conversation.
