What is Siren Call?
Last Fall, the five show creators met in Rogelio Martinez's playwriting class at ESPA/Primary Stages where we fell in love with each other’s writing
and became convinced that we had the capacity to get stuff done. We
were right!
Our five stories, filming this summer on a picturesque, ensnare us in the watery world of the Siren. She’s an elusive and dangerous creature—a
Nymph, a Mermaid, a Nereid, a Sylkie—and she beckons us in every seafaring
country on Earth.
Our web series, Siren Call, has two great things going for us
right now: a beautiful location in a house on Shelter Island which connects to
a beach, and five stories that take a fresh, feminist approach to the classic
construct of the Siren. The first season is a seed that we hope will foster
more episodes shot around New York’s many waterfronts. We hope to showcase the
many actors, writers and directors within our network and continue this
poignant series showing three dimensional female characters dealing with supernatural
elements that feel mighty yet reminiscent of real life.
Our goal?
To showcase as many female writers, actors and
directors as possible (while not ignoring the talented men in our
midst!) To quote the Dramatists Guild
report on The Count, an ongoing study to track and push for gender parity in
theater: “Only 22% of produced plays are written by women. If life worked like the theater, four out of
five things you’d ever heard would have been said by men. That means you would have missed a lot, given
the kinds of things you learn from women.”
Not to mention Sirens.
