SLAC’S Mascot - the Martlet

SLAC is strength, relentlessness, curiosity, gusto and pluck, a rare makeup that sets champions apart from the rest of the crowd. The mythical martlet, featured in SLAC’s logo, embodies all of these traits as well. Don't be fooled by its small stature or harmless demeanor, the martlet is known for its ability to handle business. So much so, in fact, that the martlet was once used in medieval family heraldry to depict the fourth son, traditionally destined to find his own way in the world. 

The martlet sports feathers in place of legs and possesses an undersized beak. Unable to land, the martlet's perpetual flight represents the lifelong pursuit of knowledge and truth. Unable to easily secure a meal, the martlet's blunt beak symbolizes resolve and perseverance. 

An emblem of independence, the martlet is an ideal companion on the most challenging academic journeys. Like the martlet, SLAC Scholars handle business against all odds. 

The SLAC Scholars Scholarship

SLAC Scholars is SLAC’s own scholarship program, designed to showcase a new breed of academic heroes for the up and coming students following in their paths.  20% of SLAC gear proceeds are allocated directly to the scholar featured on SLAC's website at the time of sale.  SLAC Scholars are selected from a national applicant pool of college freshmen, sophomores and juniors.  Scholars are selected on a rolling basis based on academic achievement and community leadership.  

For this campaign, 20% of all pledges will be allocated evenly among SLAC Scholars over the first year of the program.  The allocation will be in addition to funds raised at the time the scholar is featured.

SLAC’S Early Days

SLAC was born in the hundreds of hours of independent research en route to completing my senior thesis. The mass of solo work required a make-no-excuses-get-it-done-and-do-it-right mindset. Combining academia with a passion for athletics and fist-pounds, I made the first SLAC Pump-Up Sticker and stuck it to nearly everything needed to complete the thesis - notebooks, laptops, water bottles, frequented chairs in the library. The stickers provided the emotional support to keep spirits running high and soon started popping up on other students' notebooks and doorways and all across campus.  Hundreds of fist pounds later, SLAC had become an institution. 

Since those early days, SLAC has continued to make products to help students of all ages and backgrounds handle business and find the fun in the process. Thanks for joining the movement!

What's Next?

This Indiegogo project is the first of many SLAC Scholars ideas to fuel the SLAC Scholars program.  On the product side, we intend to ultimately build out an entire line of accessories (bags, binders, pencil cases, notebooks, blankets, shower curtains and anything else central to the student's world) and apparel (hats, jackets, hoodies and socks) to add a bit more hustle to the student experience.  On the scholar community side, we intend to grow a network of inspiring students excited to connect with one another as well as students and schools in their local communities and programs to foster these interactions.

The SLAC Scholar Pack is not a single fashion accessory but rather the flagship item in a movement to make high achievement cool, once and for all.
