“At a local level in time people think things are fine, then things rapidly spiral out of control until they become unstoppable, and we wreak massive destruction on ourselves.” Tobias Stone
Where will we be in 3 years? If the present is anything to go by, what awaits us isn’t cozy.
Interweaving two story lines, 'Sleepwalkers' explores what happens when the fears and uncertainties of an entire community are ignored: when no viable option is provided by those in charge, who is left to take to the reigns?
Meet the cast
The Production
Berlin, 1929: Marta and Greta struggle to keep their cafe open. As Greta seeks refuge from daily uncertainties and angst in Berlin’s thriving jazz club scene, Marta is finding comfort in a seductive movement promising to restore the economy and save her cafe.
Swindon, 2020: Nathan, in a similar fate, is desperate to rescue his cafe and ultimately survive. He becomes one of many rallying behind an ambitious young political party. His employee Jade meanwhile, only wants to flirt, drink and have fun; as long as her family can return back home to the UK soon, everything will be fine.
Despite living almost 100 years apart, the characters have all too many things in common. In one way or another, they are all sleepwalking. Going through the motions, deprived and disorientated, anything to ignore the fact that the times are ruled by fear and uncertainty. No one ever sees it coming. No one ever wants to believe it until it is actually happening.
Mirroring today's political landscape, 'Sleepwalkers' explores perspectives and opinions, often dismissed as 'uninformed' in liberal politics.
Created by two women, 'Sleepwalkers' is a dynamic production which is set against the sound of jazz music. A timely show, fun as well as relevant, that explores the actions and decisions that have inspired present Britain.
Who we are
We - Flora Thomson and Jenny Kassner - are ThinkTwiceTheatre - a new writing theatre company exploring alternative perspectives; challenging what shapes our societal conventions and conformities and reflecting the humanity behind social and historical movements.
We are tired of exploring and hearing from the same old liberal voices. Alienating and dismissing entire social groups has led to the precarious political and societal situation we are in today. We need to start a dialogue and engage with people whose opinions we don't share, not despite our different life experiences but because of them.
