COVID 19 – BUSINESS IMPACT
The Covid 19 disruption is obviously causing negative economic impacts and some analysts are mentioning the possibility of a recession. Various experts are forecasting the demise of the virus to begin by late spring but others are anticipating by the end of summer, while others are even less optimistic. The current reality of the virus is that 81% of those who get it are mild cases, 13.8% need more intense treatment, and around 2% are likely to die. It is fact that the measures of governmental precautions and social distancing are now flattening the growth curve significantly. The ongoing warm weather may also act to discourage the virus. The impact on the company is difficult to absolutely determine, but it is logical to anticipate consumer confidence and the desire to make large financial commitments will be diminished, and many consumers may opt to defer larger projects. It is reasonable to assume these will fuel pent-up demand later in the year (a period of recovery). It is just reported that what appear to be viable vaccines are now in the test stage and could be implemented in reasonably short order. Some of the risks that the Covid 19 situation presents to the business are: (1) diminished sales (2) irregularities in staffing (3) disruption of some supply channels (4) skewing of the operating budget and cash flows and, (5) a safe working environment. The formulation of these projections is an opportunity for the company to do a strategies reality check and double-check its state of preparedness.
The company's "Covid 19 Action Plan"
1) The projection calls for reduced sales levels from Oct 2021 to Jan. 2022 - the company must work extra- hard at attracting sales via such things as networking, local flyers, "specials", intense social media use, and word-of-mouth.
2) The company will be proactive in promoting customer benefits and "do it now!" special offers.
3) The company will continue to establish goodwill and manage long-term and loyal client relationships and this asset will be conscientiously "mined" and word-of-mouth encouraged at every opportunity.
4) The company can consider such diversifications as on-demand, “e-services”, delivery/curbside, and special-ordered services
5) The company must have a "tightened belt" approach to variable costs.
6) The company will be vigilant in 'staying on top of “governmental” and community support (business and employee) assistance
7) Ownership needs to constantly and diligently watch sales trends, expenses, costs of materials and supplies, hours, and staff productivity at an unprecedented level - daily audits The nature of the company’s services challenges it to operate in a totally “arms-length” / socially distanced manner, strategically avoiding close interaction with clients wherever possible, and the company will be diligent in applying the protocols and procedures required to optimize execution of a safety-first agenda.
