Smile and Carry On is a 10-minute drama narrative film, following the character of Mia.
Mia is a young woman suffering from depression. Finding herself lost within her thoughts, she hides herself away from her housemates who each have different approaches towards the difficult situation. Lila, Mia's best friend, becomes frustrated and angry, hurt that Mia doesn't trust her enough to talk to her. It is only when Zak, Mia's housemate, who gives off a 'laddish' persona, talks to her and opens up to her, letting her know she's not alone, does she finally see some light in the darkness.
This film aims to share the message that everyone can be affected by depression, even if you do not suffer from it. We want to let people know that they aren't alone, and it's okay. We want to show that even though it's frustrating, depression is a serious and delicate issue and people react differently to it. We want to get the message across that compassion and empathy are what encourages someone person to open up.

Leah Croft
Within her final year at Falmouth University, Leah has gained a passion for developing her skills within production design, taking a life's interest in art and applying it to film. As an element of filmmaking that has been often overlooked within student films, Leah intends on using her role to expand Mia's world, showing her character through the mise-en-scene of the film, as well as the costume design. This will help bring the film to its full potential through increasing the quality to be more professional, allowing us to gain a standard in which Film Festivals will be more inclined to show our film, letting us spread our message not only throughout Britain, but hopefully throughout the world.
