Solar power is lighting our future. And there’s no prettier picture of the future than the sun shining through clean air and shimmering off the blue waters of our rivers and oceans. It’s only fitting that the captain of the 21st century would have a boat powered by the sun that sparkles off the water he’s gliding across.
One man has taken that vision of that future and is attempting to make it a practical reality in the 21st century and beyond—not just for the super rich, but for the everyman—for every person that just wants clean, affordable energy.
His name is Skipper Jim Greer and he’s the captain of the boat dubbed The Ra named after the Egyptian god of the sun who, according to myth, was said to have ridden two solar powered boats across the universe. Skipper Jim is putting his chariot in the water to set a Guinness World Record for the first solar powered boat to complete America’s Great Loop—a 6,600 mile interconnected waterway around the Eastern United States. Captain Jim Greer has a dream not just to set this record but to invite anyone and everyone to be a part of his adventure.
What sets this journey apart from other Guinness World Record attempts? Jim Greer and his crew will be filming the entirety of the trip. From the footage he will create a series that will educate, inspire, and amaze. That's where YOU come in to the picture! Being an "everyman" himself, financing such a project is a daunting task. Your help will go a long way toward setting this record and creating this series, and is very much appreciated. Be a part of this journey with him, if not in body then in spirit. Help Jim bring solar power to the record books and to the world!
Many challenges could potentially arise when living on the water. Communications are often disrupted, there are times when we don't generate enough power to charge our camera equipment, etc. When these situations DO come up (make no mistake about it, they definitely do) we do our best to find creative solutions to them.
We also only have access to internet and mail services when we are graciously granted space at a marina, so if your item is late in getting to you, it's not because we've forgotten about you. It's because we haven't had a place to call home in a while.
Finally, please check our website (solarboatchronicles.com) or our Facebook page (Facebook.com/solarboatchronicles) to see how far along we are on our journey. Talk to us, we talk back! Having interactions with our sponsors and people who care keep up our morale and "put the wind in our sails" so to speak. Fair winds and following seas!
