SOLDIER GIRL

Soldier Girl is a CSU Northridge student film shooting in the Spring of 2020.

SYNOPSIS

Georgeanne Bedford, a 22-year-old veteran, adjusts to her new life while having to learn how to walk on a prosthetic leg. As she struggles through the broken medical system for veterans, she begins to feel she is a burden to society. With the constant nightmare of her war injury haunting her, she comes face-to-face with her inner demons as she learns to cope with PTSD.

WHY MAKE SOLDIER GIRL?

The United States Department of Veteran Affairs estimates that an average of 22 veterans commit suicide every single day. This has been a problem in this country for years and there haven’t been enough resources to support our veterans. What qualifies me, Kyle Coffman, to tell this story is while working in Washington, D.C. I personally met several amputee soldiers and witnessed their daily struggles of rehabilitating within a broken system.

VETERANS NOT GIVEN PROPER CARE

The Wounded Warriors were as young as 19 years old and no older than 23. Most of them lost one limb, but some had as many as four limbs amputated from the Iraq/Afghanistan wars. Many of them suffered not only a missing limb but were also battling severe PTSD that wasn’t treated properly due to the Department of Defense’s inadequacy to provide Walter Reed Hospital with all the tools they needed. These brave men and women, service members of the United States military, were caught in red tape bureaucracy while they rehabilitated. They were not given the proper tools or assistance to help with their mental state of mind and were oftentimes forced to deal with it on their own. This is not only a problem at Walter Reed Hospital but many other hospitals as well.

Since 2001, 2.7 million members of the U.S. Armed Forces, have come home from the war on terrorism. Of that, it has been documented that at least 970,000 veterans have some degree of disability from the wars; Physical, mental, and/or emotional. Thousands of veterans are submitting cases every day to the Veteran Affairs, who is routinely backed up 9-12 months, due to being understaffed and overworked. This means these veterans in need of mental and/or health benefits right now must wait until their assigned turn and are forced to battle with their mental trauma all on their own, without any licensed or medical assistance.

Solider Girl is meant to inspire anyone going through an inner battle within themselves that suicide is not the answer. It isn’t a story about a female soldier at war, but it’s a story about a female veteran who comes home from a tour overseas and has to live life with the consequences of the traumas of her deployment and learn to cope with her PTSD while learning to walk again with a prosthetic leg.

CREW MEMBERS

Director - Kyle Coffman

Kyle is originally from the small town of Alton, Illinois. He spent the first 10 years of his adult life working in the real estate industry in Washington, D.C. Never feeling quite fulfilled, he knew he couldn’t ignore his life long passion for being a filmmaker anymore, so he abandoned his career and he, and his husband, relocated to Los Angeles so Kyle could pursue his true passion for filmmaking.

He enrolled in cinema classes at Los Angeles City College and Pierce College. While at City College, one of Kyle’s short films, ‘It’s in the Closet,’ was nominated for the college’s Cinema Division Selected Films and his short story, ‘Prequel to Hell’s Road,’ won 3rd place at the college’s 17th Annual Writing Contest. Two of Kyle’s screenplays have placed in the top 25% in The International Page Screenwriting Awards. Kyle has been in love with Hollywood nearly his entire life. Obsessed with horror movies as a teenager, he quickly began writing as soon as he learned how to type. Originally, a self-taught screenwriter, he completed his first screenplay at the age of 17. It was at this age Kyle was presented with the opportunity to write and direct his first play about teenage adolescence and the consequences of drug abuse.

In 2018, one of Kyle’s short films, ‘Another Casserole,’ was an official selection in the Marina Del Rey Film Festival. This short film was shot entirely on an iPhone. Kyle is currently studying for his B.A. in film production at CSUN. In the spring of 2019, Kyle was awarded the Department of Cinema & Television Arts Dean’s Recognition Scholarship. After graduating, Kyle plans to write and direct horror movies in his future. He also would like to work on LGBT films and inspire others, just as he was inspirited by these films as a teenager.

Producer - Moreya Redmond

Moreya got involved in Producing in her first film, The Caretaker. Although that was not the role she desired at the time, she fell in love with producing and has enjoyed it ever since. Her next film, Number One, she came under-budget by $339.40. This past spring, she worked as a professional script supervisor on the film Across Sagittarius Street, a short film currently awaiting approval to be entered into Venice Film Festival.

At the same time, she is a professional freelance video editor for various small-scale commercial clients. Every other weekend, she operates a hand-held camera and/or Jib at live MMA events for clients like CFL, Spar Star MMA, and more. In addition, she has worked as an editor for Tukes Films in making wedding and other events videos as well as a production assistant on various other students/outside short films. This Spring 2020, Moreya is ecstatic to lead a group of determined and creative individuals on the film Soldier Girl and create the best CSUN student film possible.

Producer - George Brooks

George began acting at the age of 5 and that’s when he knew he would always be involved in narrative storytelling. After working as an actor, he tried stunt work and writing, as well as attempting to publish a graphic novel. His pursuits eventually led him to relocate from the East Coast to Los Angeles. He entered Pierce College in 2015, where he studied Media Arts, winning 2nd place in a screenwriting competition. After completing an Associate’s Degree in Film, Television, and Electronic Media, he transferred to CSUN in the fall of 2018 to pursue his B.A. in film production, submitting a portfolio and being accepted into the option in spring 2019. With a focus on sound skills, and a minor in pop culture, George plans to write and direct his own films while working in the entertainment industry. "Soldier Girl" is his first time producing.

Director of Photography - Daniel Greenberg

Daniel is a director of photography, camera operator,  and assistant cameraman. In addition, he is skilled in multiple other facets of production including production sound and still photography. Daniel has Associate’s degrees in Filmmaking, Sound Arts and Liberal Arts. His work encompasses a wide variety of material including news, music videos, tv shows, and festival film work.

Some of his more notable achievements include his work with Tequila Mockingbird Productions as a 1st assistant cameraman on several of their award-winning, festival films. Also, he has worked with Metal Flowers Media as a cinematographer on Going Feral, a television show that is currently being picked up by Discovery Channel. Daniel focuses on creating pieces of cinematic art that will live on to evoke feelings and emotions.

Editor - Joseph Thomas

Joseph Thomas is currently a student working to achieve a B.A in Film Editing at California State University Northridge. He discovered his passion for editing during his freshman year of high school; however, his passion didn’t initially come to him from watching films but instead originating from his love for the game of basketball. He spent much of his childhood playing organized basketball, but when that came to an end, he put his love for the game towards teaching himself to cut together highlights from the NBA. During his Junior year of high school, he was introduced to the idea of studying film by his former English teacher at the time. From that moment forward, he became committed to pursuing a degree in film.

His education began when he attended Modesto Junior College, in order to complete his General Education requirements. During his time, he took several Film Theory courses, which allowed him to gain a true appreciation for the work involved in the film making process. He took advantage of his 3 years in Junior College by working on several of his own editing projects including, promotional content for the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, Film Tributes, and studying how to cut to properly cut trailers for films. Before attending CSUN, he spent one year living in Sacramento attending Sacramento State University. At this time, he had the opportunity to contribute to various media groups that cover the hometown NBA franchise the Sacramento Kings, when he was hired as a part-time editor after some local journalist had discovered some of his Sacramento Kings content online. While attending school in Sacramento, he was able to take a few useful courses, including Motion Graphics allowing him to take his work to the next level. Joseph’s passion for editing is something that goes beyond what words can describe. Simply put, it gives him the opportunity to create moments that can inspire audiences the same way films continue to inspire him.

Editor - Nik Johansen

Nik started his educational journey in 2011 studying film making in Pasadena. During his freelance editing work, he discovered that there was a market for environmental design and computer-generated imagery. Because of this, he furthered his education at Gnomon School of Visual Effects. Shortly afterwards, Nik returned to Pasadena in order to study programming, architecture, and re-ignite his passion for film making. In late 2018, Nik transferred to California State University, Northridge, and got accepted into the Film Production program where he worked as an editor of various short films as well as a production assistant on many other shoots. In addition to this, he also edited sizzle reels, trailers, music videos, short films, and is always pushing forward in order to be successful while developing his own personal style of editing.
